A quick glance shows you have a cute boy but the pics have too slow of a shutter speed that results in an out of focus blur. you might want to check out photography books at your local library like Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" for better use of the manual settings. Don't be afraid to use the pop-up flash, it's useful for many indoor shots.

Thank you watt, He is only 7 months old, but anyways the slow shutter speed is that due to lack of light and the camera is trying to collect as much light as possible? Thanks in advance!!

I was shooting with my 50mm. f/1.8 at 1/1600 shutter. I know the lens is really open so that could account for being slightly out of focus...

above you mention the 50mm 1.8 but your signature notes the 50mm 1.4

If you were using the 50mm f/1.8 - it is my understanding from a dpreview.com review that the wide open 1.8 is a sharp in the center but soft in corners but gets better at 2.8-6.3 range - the review below

Yes that is correct, although there are 3 key factors

1 Aperture
2 Shutter Speed
3 ISO

the mix of these dictate every shot ever taken.

If you want a truly great read then search Amazon for Understanding Exposure which is a real eye opener and will help a lot

yes, but the good thing is you can compensate for that and get better pics. Read the other posts on ISO/aperture/shutter speed for better low light pics and look at books/websites on photography. The 450D and 18-55IS kit lens can get good low light pics but a little knowledge about settings helps. Also you might want to buy a cheap 50mm 1.8 lens ($100 or less) - very sharp with a large aperture

Have you tried using it around f4 as f1.8 would be hard to get great focus because of slight movements.

Also i sharpened with the highpass filter in photoshop and it looked very good, i believe everyone has to sharpen to a degree.

This was a quick edit with portrature2 plugin and then a lowpass filter applied and masked the bits i didnt want to sharpen, skin etc.

Wow badgerdid, That does make it look better. I have used it at higher apertures before but I'm going to try again tomorrow. I just really like low DOF shots. Would you happen to know where I can find a tutorial for the steps you made on my photo, or could you take a couple screen shots for me? I think learning this technique would be very helpful. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

I have the 50mm f/1.4 but I just happened to take this photo at f/1.8. I'll have to look up the review for it though. Thanks!

Badgerdid thank you so much. It's a really good tutorial, one of the easiest I've followed. This shows me so much. Didn't realize it was this easy. Now i just need to get my exposures just right. Do you have a place with your photos up?

Also i think the picture is very good, well taken, how was your lighting setup for this?

Thank you. I was quite proud of myself for this photo but the focus upset me a little. I am a film student but I'm about to graduate this month and we have several soundstages at our school. One of them is permanently built with different locations that include a bedroom, living room, kitchen and a bar and restaurant. I went into the bedroom which had bluish-green pearly paint on the wall and setup a daylight balanced Kino Flo and let that hit the wall. I used a tungsten balanced Kino Flo on her face. That's it!
