I have nothing against rocks, but in this picture IMO it's more of a distraction/obstacle, so I would leave it out and crop the picture somewhere halfway.

I completely disagree. Don't do a thing to that picture! The rock adds a great contrast of content and actually makes the picture from a good one into a great one. IMHO, those telling you to remove the rock are doing you a disservice.

I think I would only get the 40mm 2.8 if I had the "M" mirror-less model
