Yeah there is a point for sure the price tag LOL!!! In Canada it has a price tag of $1200.
Ouch!!!! I purchased the 50mm 1,8 for just that reason. If I had money to blow I would own the 17-55 in a heartbeat. :(

you can get a Tamron 17-50 2.8 for a lot less, and it's sharper than the expensive Canon !

Still having fun with the snow. I wouldn't mind having this as a monochrome with the red building still red. DPP doesn't do that I don't think....

Love the shots, Kim -- great job. I was particularly impressed with the snowflake capture since it doesn't look like you were using a macro lens -- really nice!!

Thanks, I was using the Sigma, it does say DG Macro on it, I didn't realize how clear that snowflake came out until I saw it on the computer, I was trying so hard to capture it before it blew away. I really like that lens and I am finally getting used to the extra weight from it. Your beach shots from the other day were great. Also really liked your recent shot with the colourful sneakers.

watt-love your beagle. Aren't they the best dogs? The eternal puppy. Sometimes too much the puppy, and the bark, oh goodness.

Trixster-I just love your photos. The Sigma 10-20 is on my wish list for one day.

Karizmatik-Your wedding shots are truly stunning. You are giving these couples such wonderful memories that they will always treasure.

Sadly no new lenses or equipment for me in the near future. I was hoping for a tripod and maybe a polarizing filter but our 10yr old furnace just bit the dust. It has been an interesting few days heating our house with the fireplace and space heaters until the new furnace gets here next week.

Nope, haven't touched my 50 since getting the 17-55. The 17-55 is utterly brilliant.

AND utterly heavy for a lens! :P

I stopped at Henry's (in Ottawa) yesterday and tried a 7D, gripped, with a 17-55 attached... oh dang! heavy!

645g.... I'd hardly call that heavy. The 24-70 weighs 950g. The 24-105 weighs 670g. The Sigma 17-70 weighs 455g. The Tamron 17-50 weighs 434g.

Not exactly a massive burden I'd say.

guess I'd have to get used to it... coming from an XS and a kit! :p

I tried it on a 7D + grip...

I loved them :)

How do you PP your photos?

If only I had a nickle for every-time I got asked that. I guess it would be too vague if I just said LR and CS4? lol. Honestly, so many people ask me this -- But it isn't anything super special, really.

It's typical edit's, like anyone would do -- Lighting, contrast, etc. Then I get the colors through WB and my # 1 thing is playing with the blacks to get a good happy medium. But it's the toning that makes them; which is through WB. And every now and then, having an overlay yellow to blue gradient cast at low opacity.

QUOTED IMAGE

Very nice shot. I'm envious of the snow though, so that may be why haha. I'd steer clear of the selective coloring, IMO. I think that "trend" just screams "amateur!" these days, very tacky. Looks perfect how it is!

Wow! I love this picture, Trixster!! Great job.

Here are some of mine. Haven't taken many since I don't like going out in the cold and been busy with work/school.

Had the camera since late October and so far loving it. Can't wait until it gets warmer so I can go taking more pictures. =]

Pretty new XSi owner, and first time DSLR owner. Still getting the hang of things, as this is quite a bit different than our point and shoot. I was home with my youngest and he was wanting to "ham it up" for the camera, as he always does, so we took a couple pics for mom. :)

What exactly you do in CS4? any filters? Of course if you don t mind sharing

From the filter menu? "Smart Sharpen" -- That is about it, though.

This is my workflow:

Load into Lightroom. Do typical edit's -- Exposure, recovery, brightness, contrast, a little vibrance, a little "clarity", then the curves section -- highlights and lights I never touch, but I always bring up the darks and shadows -- More detail at this point, the better.

Then I go back to the top, edit the WB and Temp to my specific toning.

I then load into CS4. I add a Curves layer -- Do a S bend curve, to give my images pop. If I haven't nailed the lighting in a shot, I'll load up Nik Software's "Viveza" and fix any problems there. I also use this plug-in to enhance certain things, certain colors, also bring back blown highlights -- as it's great for that. I also bring down backgrounds, or bring them up... Again to my eye. This all takes 1-2 minutes, tops.

I then flatten the image. Do another Curves layer and adjust to my eye again.

Then I save it back into Lightroom and hit Export with my Mogrify settings to add watermark and border.

That's it. Honest. Nothing spectacular lol.
