I spend a lot of time in nature. I use both still and movie images. I have a 5D Mk2 and a XHA1. However these cameras are big and bulky requiring set up time. I edit on Final Cut Studio. The images are used for everything, the web, DVD, BR, slide shows and hopefully some day broadcast. Looking for the highest quality output.
Because of these cameras bulk and inconvenience I elect to not always have a camera with me. Of course than I see something spectacular.
Consequently, I am in the market for a always carry camera be it still or movie. If movie it should take OK stills and vice versa. I intend to mount it on the end of a mono pod, my walking stick for instant access. The optical range should be as much as possible.
In researching Canon's cameras one jumps out. The Power Shot SX1 IS in the still category.
In movie cameras none of Canon's current offerings seem to fill the bill because they do not have a through the lens view finder. My experience with lCD screens in daylight at anything but the lowest magnification has not been good.
The question. For much discussion I hope. What would you choose in these circumstances for a walk around camera?

Let's hear it

Kent

The SX1 also doesnt have a true viewfinder, its actually another small LCD... but wont be problem with daylight anyway

Cant speak for the movie cameras but have you actually tried their screens or are you saying based like if its the LCD of the 5D? Because they might be diffent, for instance I cant see my 450D in the sun but never had a problem using my S5 IS screen... low resolution and etc, but usable in the sun

Guess I was assuming that LCD screens all act alike. You are right I can not see my 5D screen in the sun or for that matter the XHA1 screen isn't worth a hoot either.
I would prefer a camera that had at least 12x optical zoom and at the higher powers I find that a LCD screen in the sun is difficult to see and more difficult to hold steady. When held to the face a viewfinder gives a better anchor especially if it is mounted on a mono pod.
Does anyone have experience with the Canon VIXIA HG21? It has a 12x lens, viewfinder, HD but only 3mega pixel still.
