Just found my loyal Sigma 50-500 after several years of service is frozen and neither the zoom ring moves nor AF but red dot still comes on. Guess it was packed too tight and may be physical damage to inner structure.

Well instead of repair, this might be a good excuse to go for 100-400mmL that I always had an eye for.

Question is, based on my sour prior experiences I really don't want to be the victim of buying this today, and seeing new replacement sibling one on the market next day. That doesn't feel good. So what do you wise men and women know about possibility of a new 100-400mmL coming out in near future? The rather old current 100-400mmL is guilty of being a dirt sucker, making life difficult for sensor and inner glass. I am sure Canon has taken a note on that before anyone else but is there any remedy in horizon? After all some of the best images in this zoom rang comes from current 100-400 and you can't question the quality of L.

Any insight or thoughts would be appreciated.

There's no real evidence of the 100-400 being a dust sucker. I've certainly never seen any dust on the inside of mine and not read of any problems in this area.

I've also not seen any reports about a new version of the lens.

Why mess with something that already works very well.

If you're thinking about buying one, then get one and you won't feel disappointed.

Same from me. I've not had any bad experience with this lens and actually prefer the push-pull design. It facilitates manual focus which I find necessary at air shows or other fast moving subjects.

same here. cant say i noticed any dust sucking. I also love the push/pull design. I certainly find it quicker than a zoom ring.

Mine isn't a dust sucker, and I love the push/pull on it.

I'm thinking of this lens too but noticed there is a rumor that this lens is due for replacement in early 2010.

I traded a Sigma 150-500 for my 100-400L and have been very glad I did so. Got mine used and it's been fine.

Sadly I have never compared the Sigma 50-500 with either so cannot help you. I have read that the 50-500 is better than the 150-500?

well, you never know till its official. been hearing rumors about a Mk II 100-400 for ages. same goes for 70-200 2.8 IS and 24-70 2.8. cant say i regret waiting to purchase any of them. it's a good lens... just because a MkII is out it doesnt mean its suddenly going to give you worse results. the MkII will probably cost a lot more anyway.

I live the Desert Southwest (AZ) and I also would not consider the 100-400 to be a "Dust Pump."

It's one of the most versatile lenses I own and gets trumped only by my 300 f/2.8 (which would trump just about any lens) ;)
