My lens (Samyang) keeps only very small amount of noise when I turn my focus ring. I have to put my ear to lens to be able to hear it. This noise is more like very smooth and silent.

If you also have these aperture problems then it might be better exchange that lens to new one. Mailing back and forth really isn't that much fun, but hopefully at the end you end up with properly working lens.

Yea, I was trying to convince myself that maybe it just needs a "break in" period, but that doesn't make much sense :(

Oh well, I'll take it to the post office on Monday.

Yeah. Only way to make my lens to make little bit more noise is to turn it fast. Faster than normally when you focus and more like swing it from other end to an another end. This is something that I don't normally do. And that also sound like smooth noise from the restriction in focus ring. This just come to my mind and I thought it might be helpful for you.

Thank you, that is when I hear it too, but it sounds rougher than my other lenses and it's not throughout the entire focal range. At this point the aperture is a bigger issue to me, seems to be happening more the more I use it

But boy does it produce great images!

Well, I sent back the Bower and just got my refund. I then saw that the EF 85/1.8 was on sale for $330 and I had a $50 gift card on Amazon... so I bought that instead. Hopefully it's IQ will be close enough to the Samyang to keep me happy, if not I may be posting in this thread in a few weeks again. Either way, I'm going to continue to lurk here, so many gorgeous shots in here! :)

EF 85 f1.8 should be good sharp lens also. Another lens that has good optical performance with affordable price tag.

That lens was my other 85mm choice when I was choosing my 85mm lens.

Hopefully you get your lens fast and can start taking some awesome shots with it. :)

Thanks, I hope so too! I know the EF is sharp, but I'm not sure it'll have the same pleasing colors and background... we'll see how I like it after this week

I returned my EF 85/1.8 and got a Rokinon version of this lens this time :) The 85/1.8 was a nice lens, but it lacks the magic of this lens. I'm a little annoyed though because I'm pretty sure I got the old coating version... doesn't say "UMC" anywhere on the barrel or box

Heh, Welcome back :D
I think that I also have Multi Coated version and not the Ultra Multi Coated as my 14mm and 35mm are. Are you sure that there is UMC version of this lens available? Was your previous UMC?
