Anyone changed their focus screen in their 7D yet? I know it is not meant to be exchanged but I figure someone out there will be offering a "better" screen and installation if needed.

With the way they integrate the focusing points into the transmissive LCD I couldn't see how you could easily do it without jacking up the camera.

Doesn't it have an LCD on it? With the grids and level and stuff - might be tough to get it off the old screen and onto the new one properly??

Yeah, good luck with that.

You'd have to destroy the camera to change the screen.

The only way anyone could offer an alternate screen would involve a pretty sophisticated OLED manufacturing facility and a lot of high tech talent. We're talking many millions of investment, R&D cost, etc., and some years work. Oh wait, that's what Canon did to develop the screen themselves.

What you fail to understand is that in there on the focus screen is an active, transmissive LED. So the markings displayed change depending upon the focus modes and other things you have set up. It's not just a fixed bunch of AF point boxes like you saw on earlier Canon, etched into the focus screen.

On earlier models, I always swapped in a grid screen. Since the 7D has a choice of two built right in, all I have to do is change a setting in the menu.

silly question, but what would you be looking for an an extra screen that the 7d doesn't offer? Only had my 7d for a few days(from a 50d) and I find the customization options to be very flexible. That said, you have a ton more experience than i do, what's missing?

Knowing gasrocks, he wants a prism screen for better manual focus of his mf-only lenses. I too wish for the same thing but oh well.

Yes, I'd think you're right on that. The SP screens are great for MF; I have one in my 5D.

I mentioned in one of the myriad 7D threads that I thought it was a bit of a shame that the 7D didn't allow the changing of screens, although the new technology is certainly welcome, and was summarily dismissed as a whiner.

Edit:
As shown in this image from The-Digital-Picture.com, the focusing screen actually appears to be a separate piece from the transmissive LCD display.

That's because you silly full frame people keep coming and bashing our camera. lol j/k

I actually really miss my 5D, I got some of my favorite photos on it. I've been debating going back to it cuz I'm actually a little strapped for money and want to downsize my camera stuff...but it's a hassle to buy/sell everything.

And I seem to remember reading somewhere you could get a different screen for it eventually but Canon won't be making any and it will have to be third party.
