My wife and I are looking to move to San Diego, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any photography schools in the area

You might look at these workshops (external link). I know the owner/teacher and he is very knowledgeable. He was one of the founders of our local DSLR photography group (link in my signature...)

Arguably, the best photography school in the country is Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara.

You can take the kid out of California, but you can't take the California out of the kid

i heard some bad reports about them and i enquired and they kind of hounded me, added to that not needing to show a portfolio kind of turned me off

Going to school myself and learning photography i found that a great place to learn is at community colleges. I dont believe it will get you a degree, but there is a wealth of information for a very reasonable price. I went to Grossmont for a class, and in fall of 2010 i heard City College will be opening up a complete photography school downtown. Welcome to our beautiful city!

When I attended San Diego State University in the 1970's, there was no degree program in photography. The was a photography specialization in the Industrial Arts department but it was geared toward educating high school teachers.

You might look at the on-line catalogs for San Diego State University, University of San Diego and University of California, San Diego to see what offerings they might have.

It could be that a Community College might be your best bet...

I currently attend Brooks, and I'm in my 3rd session there. I have also attended community colleges and taken various photo courses, and none of them even come close to the level of education you get from Brooks.

The bad reports you may have heard of was a few years ago when students couldn't find jobs after work and they got mad at the school for "promising" them jobs upon graduation. The truth of the matter is that if you are good enough, you won't have any trouble finding work. Since then, the school has undergone a restructuring program in the curriculum and they are going to be regionally accredited by WASC in 2 years. They also now offer a BFA instead of a BA program.

Brooks has also eliminated 35mm film from the curriculum (although they still have it as an elective) to save the students money on their assignments. As of current, I couldn't be happier with my education and having looked at other school, I can say I can see why they say Brooks is the best.
