My brother in-law has a Canon EOS IX with a sigma 28 - 80 lens on it. He was looking to sell it, but we have no idea what they go for today. I did a little research and it looks like the body can go for $85 - $100 and the lens for $50 - $70. So I have a couple of questions.

1) Does it seem reasonable to try to sell the package for $150 (comes with case and two rolls of film and original manual). Are my price assumptions correct or am I way off?

2) Maybe I should keep it (well, buy it from him instead). Everything I've read about film, it could be fun to have around...but I'm not sure what I would shoot with film instead of digital. I'm assuming I would use my 24 - 105 L instead of the sigma 28 - 80. When would you shoot film instead of digital?

3) Any other information you can tell me about the EOS IX?

Thanks!

-Travis

I had an IX Lite some years ago. I would be hesitant to have one of these today due to availability of APS film and places to have it processed. As well when I got rid of mine, the cost of film and developing was quite a bit higher than 35mm. The size of the APS negative by the way is the same size as a crop sensor, so the 28-80 lens would have same equivalent focal lenght as on a crop sensor EOS of today. The Sigma 28-80 was never known to be much of lens either. When the prints were enlarged to sizes over 5x7, print quality suffered.

Good Luck

I don't know much about that particular film body (I own an Elan 7) but like most other film bodies they don't bring much these days. If you're not interested in doing film your best bet IMO would be to get what you can for the body and sell the lens separately, the lens will be much easier to sell.

APS film camera? I cannot claim to know the market for used film gear well but that price seems crazy high.

Getting APS film processed these days will be a real bugger, and the draw to doing so with a diminutive format vs. the scads of available 35mm and MF gear that goes for a song.....well.....it just does not make sense.

Put it on e-bay and see what it fetches.

Heck, I'm having a hard time these days finding a place to develop 35mm print film without scratching the film through the emulsion down to the base.
