Because I'm contemplating selling my current body in favor of a 5D2 or 7D, I checked out Best Buy's trade-in estimator online and they quoted me $489 for the XSi/18-55 kit. Given the going rate for the XSi kit nowadays, this seems like a very reasonable offer and I'm thinking about going through with it, as it would allow me to avoid any hassle with finding a buyer, going through PayPal, etc.

Has anyone had experience with trading in gear at Best Buy? Thoughts?

I never noticed that Best Buy does trade-ins. But if they do, I might look into it. My XT no longer meets my needs.

Just for grins I entered in the details for my 50D kit, shows $969 trade in value for giftcards and $630 check value. Hmm, might jump on a 7D now, thanks for the link OP.

No problem guys...it seems like if you're set on trading in your equipment as opposed to selling it here on the forums or on eBay, etc...then the Best buy trade in is a great option. Most other specialty camera stores would probably offer you a lot less, as they are more knowledgeable of current market prices. Best Buy, however, just has some pre-programmed algorithm that offers you a certain amount of money according to specs.

Of course, it seems worth it only if you are willing to accept the Best Buy store credit, as they substantially reduce the offer when you request check payment.

I think that any of us here that may be interested in this might want to do some homework. What I have found is that the estimate that they give you on the website is exactly that, an estimate. After you send in your equipment, they will give you an offer. Just a quick search last night I was able to find that there were a few people that were not too happy about the process. Of course I was not able to find a review from someone who sent in a DSLR though.

did that online estimate for a like new 40D and can only get $430 for it. looks like they base it more on megapixels. when i changed the megapixel selection to that of a 50D it came out to be $900ish.

the estimator is just that, an estimate. When you ship them the item they do their own appraisal and it may be significantly lower than what you saw on the link. Or vice versa. Its still not a bad program, just be careful. At least they give you the option to say no after the quote and just pay shipping charges.
