From a CNN article on Stressful Jobs That Pay Badly (external link).

8. Commercial Photographer

Median pay: $43,600
% who say their job is stressful: 100%

The job may sound glamorous, but commercial photographers, who capture models, merchandise and landscapes for books, advertisements and catalogs, have to contend with long days, picky personalities and demanding deadlines -- sometimes withstanding precarious positions just to get that perfect shot.

"One time I was doing a portrait of two guys who owned a construction company. The next thing I knew I was standing on this little catwalk under the Throgs Neck bridge [In New York City], dangling above the water because it gave me this great angle," said Gale Zucker, a photographer from Branford, Conn.

Don't know how they did the ordering, but the list is: (I find it interesting that the Photographer is the only job that 100% of the respondents said it is stressful. Are we all a bunch of whiners?)

1. Social Worker
Median pay: $43,200
% who say their job is stressful: 72%

2. Special Events Coordinator
Median pay: $35,900
% who say their job is stressful: 75%

3. Probation/Parole Officer
Median pay: $38,400
% who say their job is stressful: 58%

4. News Reporter
Median pay: $32,900
% who say their job is stressful: 62%

5. Music Ministry Director
Median pay: $40,800
% who say their job is stressful: 67%

6. Membership Manager
Median pay: $42,600
% who say their job is stressful: 67%

7. Fundraiser
Median pay: $42,700
% who say their job is stressful: 67%

8. Commercial Photographer
Median pay: $43,600
% who say their job is stressful: 100%

9. Assisted Living Director
Median pay: $46,000
% who say their job is stressful: 67%

First of all, notice that the job is "commercial photographer." This is an anomoly on that list because all the other jobs are straight salaried employees suffering only the stress of doing their particular job ...It's their employer who is shouldering all the stress of keeping the business afloat.

Commercial photographers are almost always self-employed. Not only are they doing the job itself, they are also dealing with the stress of keeping the business afloat. They're not just taking pictures, they're also marketing, bookkeeping, managing other employees, handling business insurance, business taxes, employment health insurance, and a thousand other details that salaried employees don't have to handle at the same time as their own particular job description.

Any self-employed person is going to report that his job is stressful. That doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy it--but the number of people who aren't stressed by some facet of maintaining their own business is going to be about zero.

Well, at least now I know my enjoyable hobby is in no jeopardy of becoming my hated profession (like computers have  ).

If any occupation is your "hated profession" then its time to change jobs!

No amount of money makes up for a job you hate.

haha yeah... i went to school for computers, got A+ certified.. worked in the repair/customer service side with a little retail. Wasn't long before I dropped it, couldn't stand how dumb people most people are with their computers! trying to keep up with all the latest computer specs becomes so boring and meaningless after a while, I got burnt out and it wasnt fun as a hobby anymore. Now I just build a new computer every couple of years and have fun. :)

Agreed! Life isn't work, and work should not be a determent to your overall life :p

My ethos is that i work to live and not live to work.

As soon as that shifts, its time to pick up the wanted ads and start looking.

I learned this lesson the hard way - 5 firms (doing largely the same job) before i figured it was the job i hated and not the firms! Doh!

That's ok, you're just a bit slow ;)

I find a job is also what you make of it. When working in a group, one negative person can bring everyone down. Negativity, like a positive attitude, spreads like a virus.

Photography isn't stressful; running a business is stressful. Stressful doesn't mean unenjoyable. If you're doing photography for a living, it should be second nature to you - not stress inducing.

In other words, I worry about getting my next job, not getting through one.

I don't run a business, I'm an employee. It can still be stressful!

Easier said than done. I HATE my career, but I don't think I can afford to change professions at this point in my life.

Just hope you never reach the point where you can't afford not to!
