Hey all,

This is my second attempt at a portrait session using off-camera flashes. My friend Trish and I headed to a local park and set up in a few different locations.

I used the sun as either a rim light or key light and a Sunpak 383 and Nikon SB-24 w/ shoot-thru umbrellas and 1/2 CTO gels.

Here are a few of the images (link to rest in my signature):

I would like to have thrown a bit more light on her in the first pic, but I still like it as is. Let me know what you think! Thanks.

Both shots are amazing. The first one the model is so natural and the use of the sun to create the glow around the subject was great, but I don't get the feeling where the model pops out of the picture like in the second shot. The second shot it feels like she's literally sitting in front of the picture, and the only negative would be a little of the light. The light is a touch too intense on her face at least for my liking. It still almost comes across as natural, so it's not too distracting, I'd just say drop the flash intensity a notch.

Great shots, especially for playing with off-camera for the second time.

Thanks for the comments! I agree with all of your points.

Heh, funny that you mention that, she kept saying the pictures looked like they were in a studio with a "woods" backdrop.

Now that I look at the two images together, I think the first one could benefit from some more post-processing work to help make her pop off the background more. I would've liked to get some more light on her in the first place. I think the first shot was also before I added the CTO gels on the flashes.

Lessons learned for next time!

Yeh I think the first just needs a simple levels adjustment, bringing everything up a bit brighter. Nice pics tho!
