I just read the white paper on the Mark IV and this looks like a really great camera, if it does what its designed to do. I am especially interested in the spot focus points. But, my biggest, biggest, biggest complaint about Canon vs. my old Nikon days, is that I have always found the AF tracking to be useless since it didn't keep the active focus point lit. Without that indicator, you had no idea if you were still tracking the correct subject and so everyone pretty much uses center focus point when shooting sports. In reading the white paper, I am hopeful that this is no longer the case.

So does the Mark IV keep the active focus point lit when using the focus tracking modes? None of the prior 1 Series bodies did this, and Nikon's pro bodies have done it for years.

Subscribing! That'd be very useful.

FWIW, the 7D does show the current active AF point(s) in the viewfinder, whereas previous xxD bodies didn't (something I always found strange.) I would have thought it most likely therefore that this improvement would be incorporated in the MkIV and other future Canon bodies.

They aren't lit in focus tracking mode. I shot with the prototype for a little bit, AI servo and no lit focus points.

The 7D does this, since it doesn't have the AF points engraved in the focus screen, but turn them on and off on demand. The LCD required to do this is not present in the 1D Mark IV, but is in various Nikon models.

But the old-fashioned method, of highlighting each AF point individually, ought to be just as feasible, no? That's what previous Canon viewfinders did, just not in a way that updates after initial focus acquisition.

I found that the D700 only did this in 51 point 3D tracking mode -- when I decreased the number of active AF points to increase speed, I couldn't find a way to make it display the selected point.
