Question about PayPal funds - making a split payment w/ PayPal funds and Credit Card

Question for you more experienced PayPal-ers...

Let's say I buy something online for $1,000 and I currently have $500 in my PayPal account from personal sales, etc. Will PayPal let me use the $500 from my PayPal account and then allow me to use my credit card for the remaining $500? I link my PayPal to a second bank account where I don't keep much money (just because I'm paranoid) so I wouldn't want to use my linked bank account to fund the rest of the payment.

Thanks.

Paypal should attempt to use your balance first. I do believe that you could put it all on the card and leave your balance alone (not sure).

but the answer is that paypal should take from your balance and ask you where you want the remainder to come from, assuming you have your credit card linked to your account.

It will use what is in your account first. Then the backup source.

Good luck getting it to work. I bought a lens last week and had about half of the needed amount in my Paypal account. I told Paypal to use my credit card for the extra but it overdrew my bank account instead. Still trying to get everything sorted out.

its a little tricky. You should have the CC you want to charge on linked to your paypal account. make sure it withdraws from the CC and not the bank account

I assume they give you the option? I have both a bank account and credit card linked to my PP account, but ALWAYS have to manually choose credit card everytime I make a payment. However, it says that anytime my bank account does not have the funds available for payment, they will automatically cover it with my credit card. Does this not prove to be the case in this situation?

Just make sure you have your CC setup as Backup funding for this transaction. On all mine it defaults to my bank acct so I always have to change it to CC.

Sorry, I misread your post.
Yes, Paypal will always pull from your existing balance before pulling from your bank account or credit card.

PayPal will always use existing balances before charging your credit card. The only exception is when using PayPal Buyer Credit which will allow you to fund the entire purchase.

I also have both a bank account and a credit card linked to my PP account. I just recently added the bank account so I have little experience with this. However, on my last purchase, I had about half the funds in my account but Paypal did not put the rest on my credit card. Instead, Paypal charged the entire order to my bank account which resulted in an overdraft and a nice $30 charge from my bank.

I think I see where my error was. I probably told Paypal to use my bank account rather than my credit card. My account had part of the funds but not enough to cover the entire purchase. I should have told Paypal to use my credit card first? For some reason I assumed Paypal would used the funds in the account and then put the rest on my backup (credit card) but it did not do that.

I just recently purchased something using PayPal and they consumed my available PayPal balance first, then collected the remaining $1.08 from my bank account.

I hate PAYPAL Customer service. I finally gave up on them. I have a PAYPAL card and it expired.
So they sent a new card, but didn`t update or renew the date on my Paypal account- the card on file still has the old expiration date. I called 3 consecutive days telling them to change expiration date on my file bec. I could not use the card for online transaction. I called 8 times a day and always assured me that it`s been updated. That was 8 months ago and still, everytime I log in to my Paypal account, my Paypal card is still expired. I emailed them and called them and nothing happens. It`s hopeless....

im pretty sure you have to update the paypal account urself. in their system, ur card is up to date, but on ur account its not updated since you havent updated it.

something like that happened with me, too. but rather than barraging them with phone calls, i first look if i can update it myself, and turns out i can.

as for the original post, they use the money in the account first before they use ur bank, then ur CC; on that order. hope that helps.

They must not do this automatically however or my bank account would not have been overdrawn on my last purchase.
