I have downloaded and run a shutter count programme. my 40D had a new shutter fitted about a year ago, would this count be from when the camera was new or just since the new shutter was fitted?

Yep, astrojargon is the program I used. Seems like it is a Camera actuations count rather than a actual shutter count then - I suspected this from the count I got. Thanks for the feedback. I would guess that the count would be reset only if a Canon tech reset it. However there are other reasons to keep the count the same. All other parts wear and tear as well, not just the shutter. It could be of great benefit to Canon to know how many actuations the camera has, not just the shutter. I'm sure that there is some database at Canon service that shows the shutter getting replaced at about the 5k mark though. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
