What's an old Sigma 70-200 2.8 worth?

I have a chance to buy an older version of a Sigma 70-200 2.8 and need to make an offer on it (it's at a local camera store). It is in good condition and seems to take good quality pictures, but the guys tell me that it will not work with any newer cameras and has to be rechipped. That is fine for now because I have a 1D Mark IIn & a 20D, but in the future if/when I upgrade, it will not work.

It will be only for the lens, no tripod ring, no lens hood, no soft case, no box. Only the lens and caps. The asking price is $550.

I have contacted Sigma about it and they confirmed that it is the older version and needs rechipped, but they no longer offer this service.

My question is: What would this lens be worth? What would you offer?

if the lens needs to be rechipped you're probably SOL. i would pass and buy a current lens.

You can get a more recent copy for hardly much more than that, a path you'd be better off taking for sure.

is it the same as these two?...also if sigma won't rechip it, what's the point of buying it?...does it even work with your two cameras you have now?...one of the two auctions above mentions it not even working with the 10D

A new one costs $799 and a good used one probably in the mid $600 range. $550 for a lens that can't be re-chipped isn't worth it.

I've got an old 70-210 f/2.8, and it won't work even on a 350D (Rebel XT).

Actually it will work if you stick to aperture-priority and f/2.8. Any other setting will freeze the camera with Error 99.

$550 for a paperweight is not cheap.

That's what I was thinking. It was worth a shot anyway. :)

It's the APO HSM version (pic below) and it works with the 1D mark IIn that I have (I tested it out with it). It's not quite as old as those in the auctions but still old enough it does need rechipped.

It's a different and newer model than mine (which is 210mm at the end).
Nevertheless, I wouldn't touch that thing with a 10-foot pole: sooner or later it will end up as mine on the bookshelf :(

I just bought that same model for the 7d.. What do you mean rechipped??
I just got it today, and it appears to work. What does rechipping do??

Thanks..

I thought the APO were newer than the older versions? Its been so long since I have bought Sigma, or even read much about them. Hmmm.....

I would pass at $550. I picked up mine (the current APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM version) locally used for $610. Less than 5 months ago.

Sigma no longer rechip lenses. If it is an EX or EX DG, you are ok. If it just says APO, pass.
