There's nothing worse for an official than an inadvertent whistle on a touchdown. Our umpire had one a few years ago on the first play from scrimmage on one of the best QB sneaks I've ever seen. The QB was about 15 yards down the field when he blew the whistle. He walked over to me and said, "I want to crawl in a f-ing hole." I don't blame him.
As an official, I could probably drop a flag on every single play, name a penalty (usually holding) and would be right about 99% of the time. Unless it is a direct influence on the play, then I will overlook it. If it is safety related, then I'll drop the laundry every time.
Keep something in mind the next time you want to hang the official, there are 22 players and only 5 or less officials. In some cases 2-3 officials watching 22 players, things are going to get missed. Yes it sucks, but that's the way it is.
I agree completely. I've done a little officiating myself and can't say I haven't wished I could take a blown whistle back. It's rare, but when it does happen you feel terrible.
