Here are some from my most recent game. Shot from penalty box, no glass. Mostly used 50D and 135L 2.0 which I am starting to like for hockey on dark rinks. Exif embedded. C&C appreciated. Full set at http://www.cjscons.com/jrbraves/nov13 (external link)

Christian, your whites don't look as bright to me as they did last year. I prefer these. Very sharp and well done.

Ody:

Thanks! I am starting to get the hang of post processing the whites and ice especially. The gradient/graduated filter tool in Lightroom helps a ton for the ice when needed.

Chris

Fantastic shots.

Do you find the 135 gives you good reach? I've been thinking about the 85 1.8 or 100 2.0 for hockey but now I'm wondering if those will be too short.

Moose:

At least from the penalty box (which is right at centre ice in our rink) the reach is OK and about perfect for action between the faceoff circles. It is a bit short for things at the net or in far corners, but the 15 MB of the 50D allows for some crop to offset that. Of course the lens fails for close up action too as soon as anyone comes to close.

From behind the glass I usually shoot from the corner up the ice and I can get good framing of a skater from centre line to blue line, and about to top of circles before he is too close.

My 70-200 f2.8 gives a lot more flexibility obviously on both ends, but the extra aperture of the 135 is definitely a benefit and I can tailor what I shoot accordingly.

I think your proposed lenses WILL be too short and you also don't have a close up option. I sometimes will throw my 17-55f2.8 on a second body when on the glass for any close action.

Chris,

The penalty boxes in the rinks we go to are at center ice also. Fortunately, I can shoot from them. I have a 70-200 2.8 which works well at 1 of the rinks with decent lighting but I'm needing faster at some of the "dungeons".

The 135L is out of my price range right now which is why I was thinking about the others. I appreciate your feedback and information as I'm new to shooting hockey from that lcoation. Thanks!

I know what it is like with hockey rinks. Most of them are horribly lit :/
