Capturing the Kingfisher in camera is no easy task as you all know - they don't hang around for long, if you're lucky at all to see them, and are rapid fliers. This morning this one flew out and away from under a grassy bank and then unexpectedly did a u-turn, turning back and landing 20 feet in front of me, and 4 seconds later made off.
So if you're not quick on the draw you wont make that capture!
I managed to fire some shots, a sample attached.
Canon 500D/100-400L
ISO 400, 1/800 sec

males have an all black beak, the ladies add a bit of lippy (orange on lower part of bill)

I've been trying to get a good one for a year now. He's always about a half a block away and likes to look the other direction. Have some great shots of the back of his head! very frustrating, it's a long drive to that spot too
