1D Mk II / IIn price - What's up? 7D?

I've noticed Mk II and IIn prices have dropped. I bought my Mk II used for $1100 early this year. Now it is worth about $900. At that time IIn bodies went for $1700, now it seems that $1300 is closer to the price.

I'm thinking it is due to the 7D. For $1700, you can buy a new camera whose AF performance rivals the 1D II and who's noise performance exceeds it. Add to that the announcement of the Mk IV and you end up with some II and IIn bodies being dumped on the market as those who chose to skip the Mk III get in line for the IV.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that the Mk II and IIn prices will continue a downward slide as used 7Ds become available. If the 7D is $1300 used, who'd pay $1300 for a IIn? I'm thinking the IIn will settle around $1100 and the II will bottom out at $750.

Thoughts?

You are most likely correct. Can't wait to get my hands on a II or N sometime in the near future!

What are you basing your opinion of 7D ISO performance on?

I own a IIn and no one is going to pry my hands off from it.

Pretty good bet.

Over on sportsshooter there have been multiple threads about selling older 1 series cameras to go to the 7D--and these are people that pay the bills with the images they produce--not over enthusiastic amateurs. ;)

I'd question anyone who gives up a 1D series for a 7D. I own a 7D and it is great for a 1.6x crop but it's not in the same league as the 1D series which are 1.3x.

Would you trade your 7D for my 1D Mark II? I'd of course add some cash and we could even meet half way to make the trade :D

No, I need the 1.6 crop factor. I wouldn't mind a 1D series but I just can't take what they go for new and used they tend to have a lot of clicks.

I'd think the IV coming out has more to do with it, as it puts the IIn and II several models back from the current model in the line. That and just the fact that the cameras are getting older.

Of course these prices have my head spinning trying to figure out what to buy. I like the 7D for the features and it would be new with a warranty. But for the same or less money a used 5D classic or 1D IIn are interesting choices too.

I don't think it is the IV. Well, maybe, but in an indirect way.

1D II and IIn prices have been pretty steady for almost a year. Then, all of the sudden, they drop by 25%. That's 25% of used priced, all in about a month's time. Something happened in the market.

I don't think it is the IV because that is $5000 camera. Folks with that sort of cash were probably already shooting a Mark III. If there were a bunch of III's for sale, I'd say it was the IV that caused it, but all the II and IIn's? I'm thinking not.

Anyway, that's my theory.

And I have a II for sale, looking for a IIn :-)

It's people wanting to go from a mkII or mkIIn to a mkIII most likely. Prepping for the eventual drop in mkIII prices. I picked up my mkIIn for $2200 last year and can pick up a mkIII around that now. Do I regret the loss in value of my camera, not for a minute. The images I have been able to get with it are stellar but for the price I'd get out of it now I won't be selling it.

There is no way that I'd go from a 1D series to a 7D. I've shot with my MkIIn in a downpour to cover games and don't hesitate for a minute. I'd never do that with a 7D. If MkIII prices start to drop due to pressure from the MkIV I may have to pick up a MkIII.

It's interesing to watch comments as new models are released. Overnight the new model is the greatest camera ever made and the older models are now pieces of junk. If I see a IIn in nice condition with less than 25k clicks drop down to $900 or less I'll buy it even if I do have to put it on a credit card for a few months.

Ohh believe me, my MkIIn is not junk, far from it. The only reason that I would upgrade right now would be for higher ISO speeds which would allow me to shoot higher shutter speeds for nighttime football and indoor events like wrestling and basketball.

Right now I'm hesitant about the MkIII due to the fact that many rave that the MkIIn has the best focus of the 1D series.

I'm watching both the IIn and the III. We'll see when the IV hits the streets. I'm also waiting to see if Canon does anything with the 5D as far as the AF system. In the meantime I'll get by with a 7D and a couple of Rebel bodies. Of course if a IIn opportunity presents itself I'll jump on it.
