This is a very dumb newbie question but my co-worker couldn't answer it and he's not a dumb guy.

Is there a reason why center focus is not the default on my 5DMkII? It seems like each lens is different and needs to be set independently?

I believe on my old Nikon F with 50mm kit lens the default and only choice was center focus.

The center focus point only is not default because Canon left them all on so a newbie picking it up stood a better chance of getting something in focus with auto detect. I always turn them off and select center only on both bodies of mine so I control what is focused on instead of the camera. Center focus is also "smarter" than the outer points so one more reason to use it. With my luck, auto focus on all points invariably picks the wrong point to focus on....

Thank you for answering this. I thought I was messing up because so many of my shots were out of focus when I first started using it. I turned on only center focus and ignored the outer focus points and I started getting tack sharp shots without really even trying.

Point selection is set in the camera and is independent of the lens and therefore one setting will apply to all lenses.
