I was trying some different kinds of shots with some matches tonight (specifically trying to get the smoke trails) and managed to get this one. Aside from a slight crop and being resized for the web, it's unretouched. I lined up 2 matches, lit the one in the back, let it burn for a few seconds and then blew it out and taking the picture. I thought the way the smoke curled was pretty cool. I just can't think of an appropriate title.

Here's another without the "stacked" match approach. This one also had the smoke which added a bit to the image.

I plan on wasting more matches soon to play some more, but I thought I'd share these since I had fun shooting them. Comments are welcome!

I may be fascinated with volcanoes, but the name's Lisa.

I love playing with fire in pictures.. I have torched a pumpkin here (http://www.flickr.com …e/sets/72157622728092718/ (external link)).

What light source did you use to pick up the smoke? I've tried playing with insence sticks before but my light source was naff.

I like to keep my fire pix on a small scale with candles or matches. The thought of it getting out of control scares the willies out of me! Your pumpkin shot is kinda cool though.

As for the light source, I used a studio strobe with a softbox on the left and a speedlight off to the right and towards the front. I'm still tweaking the setup to get it like I want. I also bought some incense to play with on smoke trails but haven't used it yet.

Hehe, we had the pumpkin outside in an open space and had a hose at hand for H&S!! lol.

Ah, I'm a novice and don't have such equipment.. We had a mere torch when we tried it, which failed.. Are the studio strobe equipment expensive? I'd imagine they are.

The one I get was a starter kit by Interfit. It was around $300. It has 2 strobes, 2 air cushioned stands, a softbox, and an umbrella. Though I bought mine from a local reseller, here's the kit at BH
