I am assuming that the slowest shutter speed that can be displayed in the top display and viewfinder is 30 seconds, however our cameras can expose longer than 30 seconds in AV or P mode.. correct??
It seems like anytime the camera chooses an exposure longer than 30 seconds the "30"" blinks in the viewfinder and top display which according to the manual is a warning of under exposure. Is this blinking just a false warning or does it mean that you have reached the slowest shutter speed that can be displayed. Is there anyway to control longer exposures without going into "Bulb"??

I don't believe that cameras will expose over 30 seconds unless done manually in Bulb mode.

Looks like I found my answer. Anything over 30 seconds has to be in bulb. I tried closing my lens down a bit, but no matter what 30 seconds is all the camera will do. Interestingly enough, in AV mode the camera choses to open up the lens to correctly expose for 30 seconds no matter what.

Here is the shot I was messing around with.

Needs a little PP, but not bad for straight out of the camera and just resized.

Hummmmm I'll have to try this but I think If I bracket my exposures, I can go over 30 seconds. As a matter of fact, I think I definitely do. I'll check..

Ok, you are correct. No need to take shots. I just checked all my Metadata in recent night shots and saw the max 30 seconds and aperture change.

Boy sometimes 30 seconds seems long..

No, I meant AV mode... when the camera is choosing shutter speed the max it will go is 30 SEC.

There are cameras that do allow longer times than what you can set manually, when you use the camera in some automatic mode.
So the question is valid.

That is correct. The only time you can go over 30 seconds is in Bulb mode.
