I've had my Canon Rebel XT for 3.5 years and it has served me very, very well.

I feel it lacks in high ISO performance, small LCD screen, auto-focusing, etc...and guess what improves on that? The T1i, of course.

I'm not interested in a bigger/heavier body or full-frame, so the 50D, 7D, etc. don't really have much interest for me. Plus I have some vital crop-lenses in my small arsenal that I don't want to part with.

So, shelling out $650 for the Rebel T1i...am I crazy? I've got some cash to burn, for what it's worth.

If you want the body only Adorama is selling it for $529 refurbished.. I ordered mine two days ago....

Canon still has its loyalty rebate program going (I think). That would get you a $50 refund plus get a little more off by searching/shopping with bing.

Dpreviews review of this camera is right on. I've been shooting RAW since '06 but with this camera I shoot JPEG only. I say its a great upgrade. I used to own the XT.

I'm curious as to why you don't want to upgrade to the XXD line of cameras.

This.

I don't think a 7D would hold up any better do a 4 foot drop on concrete than a T1i would. Please demonstrate on video :)

Well it's just an assumption, Metal is stronger than plastic.

However I'm not going to test the theory on my 7D :p

I would have to agree with the whole metal frame vs not all metal with some plastic frame...I have yet to see a thread " my rebel fell apart because its made of plastic " thread...I think its more about ergos and marketing strategy to justify a higher price over all...will it last longer? Who knows..

+1

I'd say you're less likely to drop the bigger bodies, just cause they're more molded to the hand

"Crazy"? No.
Is it a good idea? Depends.

What are you doing or do you want to do that the Xt won't do? If you can't think of anything, maybe the money would be better spent on better or additional equipment such as lenses, flash, tripod, etc.

I've had my Xt for a couple of years and haven't even come close to any limitations yet. Rather than a new camera, I'm more interested in a better tripod, additional lenses, and maybe Photoshop.

It's going to be quite a while before my skill exceeds the Xt's capabilities.

Everybody has different tastes.

The T1i has a much improved LCD over previous Rebel models. I got mine mainly to replace my XSi with something with video capability. I'm very much into video and the T1i supplements conventional video gear with extra and better low light performance and much better control over Depth Of Field.

But I also jumped on the 7D so I have (and use) both.

If the OP feels he upgraded...

...I think he did.

When I'm just going "out and about" the T1i is awful convenient and will get me good stills and because I know how to work around limitations I can also get good video.

For real serious projects, it will be the 7D.

Wouldn't do it myself, because I just find taking pictures with a bigger body so much better, and I'm falling in love with my 7D :p

Have you shot with a bigger camera before?

I've had a Rebel XT for years and I STILL miss my Olympus C-5050 like crazy. A camera as bulky and inconvenient as the XT isn't with me all the time the way my 5050 was.

I'm excited that they're coming out with more smaller cameras with removable lenses.

As much as I miss the small size of my 5050, I miss the F/1.8 zoom lens which was also a good macro. Sure it might not have been great in low light, and it's movies were craptastic, but it took beautiful macro shots in the evening sunlight, and it's lens was actually sharp enough for professional artwork photography.

Years later, and we're STILL waiting for a compact camera with a great f/1.8 lens and a big sensor that capture low noise natural light photos at night, and indoors in dimly lit places...

I will get a T2i as soon as I can because of it's wonderful movies, but the noise at higher ISOs is STILL disapointing. I wonder how many years it will be before we can stop worrying about noise in an affordable camera?
