3 weeks ago when I first got my 7d, it had "err 70" show up on the top LCD and the camera was locked up so I had to pull the battery. When it locked up, the picture I just took was stuck on the rear LCD but it never was written to the CF card when I loaded it in my computer.

I searched and the code means an image related malfunction has been detected. Could this be a memory card or camera problem? The USB cord was uplugged from my camera right before it happened but I don't know if it is related to that either. I debating whether or not to send it to Canon to let them check it out but it hasn't ever happened since then with 1500 shots taken.

I have many times in my camera after copying the pictures to my computer. But the error has never happened again. Maybe it was the memory card after all and all of the formatting fixed it? It is a PNY Optima UDMA CF card.

What kind of CF card was in the camera when it locked up?

Do you have any SanDisk or Lexar cards? If so, do you get the error code on those cards? If you don't have any other CF cards get your hands on one (even non-DMA cards) and see if you get the error.

I had the same problem, but also something worse, My mac can't import photos or video from the camera, It used to do it OK, but today both iPhoto and "image capture" say that the images cannot be imported, the programs detect the files (including size and type of file in image capture), I get errors when trying to import. Restarted the mac and formated the compact flash cards I have (2GB tascend 133x and 8GB Sandisk Extrem UDMA 60mbs)

What can I do? The error dissapeared when I took off the battery but I can't import.

Send it in for repair

When they work right the results are phenomenal.

I had the exact same ERR 70 appear last night on my 5D2, and the mirror locked up on me. I had to pull out the battery, and after plugging back in, everything returned back to normal.
After 500+ photos it's still normal. I did some research online, seems like the motherboard will have to be replaced.
I'll stick with it for now, until/IF I get it again. Then will probably send it in for repair using CPS.

Just got my second camera back and after a minute of use, without cf card inserted i got err 70 on the top lcd. So it's not CF card related..should i just return the camera again and wait another 10 days for a new one or should i just use it and replace it after a while if this problem persists? I'm really thinking about 5dmk2 because of all the problems i've had with 7d.

Send it back in and insist they fix it. You didn't pay that kind of money for an err 70!

Yeah, the only problem is, i have allready sold my previous camera so if i send it back, i'm stuck with no body for another 10 days or more. I have to send it to another country. Will see if this error repeats, then i will contact seller again. I also find a tiny scracth beside the lense mount, which could state that the camera was bumped or someting. I'm trying to get the shutter count, but eosinfo and kind are not working on 7d. I'm thinking they send me a used camera or refurbished or someting....in anyway it sucks big time.

Sorry about your luck. I hope it is just intermittent for you and you can use it for the most part as it is then.

That's why I have 4 DSLRs and a bunch of film bodies... you never know when your main body, backup and 2nd backup might fail ;-)a

This is an old thread that I made and it looks like has been bumped by other people with similar problems. It also seems like not many people have this problem. But when they have it, it's hard to fix. Here is an updated regarding mine.

1st 7D: Random Err 70 but not very often. I sent it in to Canon regarding this issue along with focus issues. They could not find anything wrong or what was causing it. Still had random Err 70's.

2nd 7D: Canon sent me a replacement 7D. It has been 5 months and I haven't gotten any errors yet.

Thank's for the follow up. I will contact seller and see what they will advise to do. I will do some testing this week to see about any other problems. I really don't want the camera fixed, but rather get a brand new one, so it's better to send it back as DOD (dead on delivery) as the previous one. I also need to flash firmware, since now it's 1.21. Don't think it has anything to do with my problem but i'm computer person and sometimes unlogical stuff helps :)
