So I have had such great help with deciding that this is the first set of strobes that I'm going to buy, so thank you all for your help!!! http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/CF0514K1/ (external link) I was about to pull the trigger, when I was talking to the rep and he told me in a very scripted voice, that these strobes are not designed to be portable strobes, and that whatever modifications I make would be up to me. Leading me to believe there are option to make this set portable, but the manufactures don't want to be responsible. Previously I had been considering AB's with the Vagabond (eventually) So does anyone have any insight???

the size of the genesis is not really for portability. it's almost twice the length of the AB. This is one of the reasons why i got rid of my genesis 400's and switched to AB.

As for portability in terms of power, you should be able to use the vegabond to fire the genesis.

Thanks Jerome! That is good to know! Did you ever try to use the genesis outdoors despite its size? Do you know of anyone that has actually used the vagabond and the Genesis together? I want to know if it can work, not if it is the most convenient. I will am willing to put the extra effort in if it is a possibility. But I want to KNOW that I'm not going to fry my lights and have to start over if I try it.

There's a thread here where someone used the Vegabond with Genesis with no problems at all. You can also check out Innovatronix Explorer XT (external link) for portable power. Some members are using this too.

Robert (TMR design), i believe uses this and can chime in on this.

I've seen some reports of Vagabond's working with Genesis light and some that said they had problems. More than likely the problems came up with either multiple strobes or with the 400's. The Genesis lights are almost identical in design to the Elinchrom D-Lite's and there were similar issues with the D-Lite's because of the multi-voltage circuitry.

Innovatronix has taken steps to achieve compatibility with almost all the multi-voltage strobes made by producing the Explorer XT SE. The standard XT will have the same problems with relays switching when using multiples or the 400's but the XT SE shouldn't have the issue with multi-voltage strobes.

Nice! I currently have 2 mobilight 301's, 2 genesis 400's and 1 photogenic 2500dr... it seems like what i want is the EXPLORER XT (SE). It should in theory run all of them (separately or a couple at a time of course) if i so desire. Am i reading that site properly?

I'm sure the size difference wouldn't be that big of an issue. At work we've used ultrazaps outside with our vagabond battery and had no issues. The utrazap2400 is bigger and heavier than a genesis 400. We have an alienbee 400 that we got specifically with the vagabond but sometimes we need more oomph. I will grant you that the ABs are smaller and lighter.

I personally don't have the buff flashes but am seeking to have the portability that i get a taste of with the mobilight 301. I'm looking for something a little less crude in terms of a battery system. The multi voltage compatibility issue is good to know! Thanks!!!

Of course he was standoffish... He's supposed to get you to buy a travelite if you want to go mobile. :rolleyes:Even if he knew how to make it portable through one of the products listed on this page, he probably would be in trouble for not touting the company product.
