Sigma Warranty Information

I emailed Sigma today asking whether a lens purchased in Canada would have any problems being serviced in the US. Much to my surprise I was told by the customer service representative that warranties are not transferable to begin with no matter where or when the lens was purchased. This really confused me as I have never heard of a company refusing to transfer a warranty as long as it was purchased from an authorized dealer.

Is this one of those technicalities where they have to tell you one thing but don't really care? Are they trying to get me to go out and buy it new? Have warranty procedures changed recently?

if that lens was never registered by the original owner and you have the purchase receipt you should be fine. i have a sigma 50 (us version) in to sigma Canada.. the lens has a 4 year US warranty but only and 1 year international warranty and that's how sigma classifies my lens... so its got a year.. oh and sigma is getting greedy too. they require a $50 dollar plus 13 percent taxes for any warranty work because the lens wasn't sold by them or bought in Canada. and this is because you can buy the same lenses in the states for about half the Canadian price.. also sigma Canada lenses have a 10 year warranty if serviced in Canada. so I'm sure you'll have at least a 1 year warranty if you take a Canada lens to USA. and i doubt sigma USA will charge you this stupid 50 dollar fee like sigma canada rapped me.

one other thing if i need work on the lens after the year I'll send in to sigma USA and I'll have 3 years over there.. here in Canada their service says a turn around time of 48 hours.. plus shipping times and a couple days to get it into service once they get it.

Many companies only honor the warranty for the original purchaser.

I've yet to find any camera equipment manufacturer that officially honours the warranty for second hand items. Certainly Canon, Sigma and Tamron don't (at least in the UK - I can't speak for anywhere else).

and same goes for canon. if you buy used and have the original purchase receipt.. and as long as it has not been registered by the original owner, you are fine.

key word being registered here.... if the lens gets sold three times and no one registers the lens and the original receipt gets passed a long..... you can get warranty work done from any manufacturer within there warranty period. Personally im done buying anything here in Canada electronics related... tired of being endlessly raped by 30% overcharges added with 12% tax. I think a little inconvenience of having to send things into the States for warranty work and waiting is worth the thousands of dollars you save by buying from the US. Heck with the dollar so high i think buying just about anything from the States makes sense.

This whole "buy canadian" thing that some people got going on is beyond me.... i mean when does one get tired of paying 30-50% more for sh*t?

Canon, Sigma and Tamron (in the UK) have all told me that their official policy is not to honour the warranty for second hand items. The warranty terms on the Canon UK and US websites even state this (something like "the warranty applies to the original purchaser, or the person for whom the camera was bought as a gift"). From various posts on this forum, however, it seems that in practice they most likely will honour the warranty if you can produce the original receipt.

I really hate the fact electronics items via Canadian channel have historically taken advantage to the Canadian consumer. It is always as excuse so they can charge you more $$$ times have changed its a global market I don't feel anyway for buying US or anywhere else if it is cheaper. Support local economy? Why when they are ripping me off while lying to me.

I totally agree with you.. but i've never bought in canada to start with.. I've always gone US for anything camera related.. especially these days we just get charged way over and above what it needs to be.. UK ppl have it worse from what they say.. but still if i can save money elsewhere then thats where i'll be shopping..

I wouldnt have half the equipment i have if i had to buy in canada.

yes they have to honor the warranty for even the fourth owner of the item if they have the original receipt and the item wasn't registered, why? because they have no way of proving at that point that you are NOT the first owner of product. Its when the item gets registered they know who the original owner was.
