Canon Rebel XS or XSi kit. If you would like video feature, the T1i would also be a great starting camera. If are more interested in an upgraded amateur starter body, I would recommend the 40D or 50D with the 28-135 lens. You will have to buy used with the 40D body. Sorry I cannot be more help, as you did not mention what aspect of photography you are interested in as well as what you are expecting from the transition.

Also the book: Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson should also be on top of your list. It will be the best $30 bucks you can spend on photography.

Welcome to the Forum!:)

Any DSLR will be a huge step up from a P&S.

What we would need to know to advise you properly is:
1) Budget - most important issue.
2) Type of photography you are wanting to try
3) Existing skill level

There are a lot of options at the cheaper end ( from new 1000D's to used 40/50D's). The 40/50D's are a whole lot more camera than the rebel/XXXD series with more to learn but potentially better results.

Type of photography - do you want general all round to start with, landscapes, portraits or birding/motorsports? This will decide your initial lens purchases. Ie 18-55 is ideal for landscapes/portraits initially but if you were wanting to shoot sports/ birding then a long lens (70-300 or longer) is a requirement.

What is your current skill level? Do you know how to decide exposure (ISO, Aperture and shutterspeed)?
