I'm still within my return window for my new 5DII. What is up with this noise pattern? Is this normal? This is turning up to varying degrees when I try to bring some detail back into dark areas (like with some fill light in lightroom). The cropped areas here are exaggerated (Fill Light: 100) to show it in all it's noisy glory.

Is this normal for noise on a 5D Mark II? Does it always get this crosshatch pattern in the darks?

The pattern here is really visible in the night sky. Again, this is just to illustrate the pattern I'm seeing.

Yes, it is normal, i.e. it is inherent to the 5D2, 40D, 50D, etc. The 1Dxxx are not so bad.

I read that one of the noise reduction products can eliminate it very good (I forgot, which one).

Especially true if you want to torment yourself by boosting underexposed areas.

I have noticed the cross hatching is emphasised with certain magnifications so I think there might be an interplay between the cameras resolution and the monitor resolution. I have seen it happen with Nikon D3x files as well.

I can't believe the 5d2 doesn't have 20 stops of DR. What a lousy camera.

/end sarcasm

Yes, the 5d2 (along with almost all digital cameras) will have its limits. Boosting dark/shadow areas will highlight those limitations. Could it be better? I don't know. I'm sure many wish/hope that it could be better. Seems a bit unrealistic though.

I'm not here to bash the camera. I've been very pleased with many aspects of the camera. I was expecting noise but not so much the pattern. The resolution is still stunning.

+1.....Kinda silly, yes, if you push the limits, you will have pattern noise..The other thread was pushing EV like 5-8-10 stops and wondering why Canon would do such a thing to folks who want to shoot with obscenely incorrect exposer......

The bigger issue here really is the pattern noise more than anything. There is no need for the pattern noise, that is not common to other manufacturers. Canon improved this issue dramatically on the 7D, and that bodes well for the next generation bodies.

Are we sure about that? I thought I had seen otherwise from our resident engineers.

They had to really push it to see some resemblance of a pattern from what I remember. It may be there, but you had to push the 7D image more than the 5D. I have taken a ton of 6400 and 12800 shots and there is no discernible pattern unlike the 50D (and 5DII, 40D, etc).

Yes, alot of people probably would never push their images that much, or would just shoot HDR, something I would really like to get into (Photomatix, etc).

Ah ha! Thanks for reminding me that I need to reinstall Photomatix. I swapped over to Windows 7 and have had a hard time remembering what softwares I had that I wanted to transfer over.

Guess that tells you how often I don't use Photomatix. :(
