7D + 16-35 2.8L or Sell my 1DIII and buy a 1DIV?

I currently have a 1Diii which I use for sports and wildlife. I love the camera but would like better high ISO capabilities and more megapixels for cropping purposes.

Should I sell the 1Diii and use the $$ to finance a 1Div or buy a 7D and still have enough to get the 16-35 2.8L (which I really want) and keep the 1Diii. I like the 1 series body for bad weather shooting and sort of rougher environs.

I would appreciate any advice - especially from 7D users who have used it for birding.

Thanks
Brad

i think you should get 7D and 16-35 =)
Like.... IDIV will be extra-expensive-er right after it comes out.

16-35 wont really be that wide on the 7d, id go for the 1d 4, but id wait to see how it fairs out with review and real world tests. you're spending thousands of dollars, research for awhile.

^ He would be keeping the 1d3 if he got the 7D- 16-35..

I am in a similar boat. I want a cameras that does video for this central america trip i am going on.

From what I have heard (mainly from nicksan) the 1DIII and 7D are very close in overall IQ.

To be honest I have not really seen that but people have said it.

Thanks guys. I find that I start to pick up quite a bit of noise at ISO 1600 + which sometimes is necessary for shooting in dark hockey rinks with terrible lighting - especially on the dark uniforms. Generally, I love the IQ of the 1Diii.

Tip3R, thanks for the compliment!

With regard to the 16-35, while it won't be great on a 7D, it will be on my 5D.

Patience, especially with camera bodies is rewarded. Not that I take my own advice but -

I would say purchase a 16-35L mk1 or mk2 now, I'd go for the improved version unless filter sharing is an issue for you. I have the mk1 on my 5DII for filter sharing reasons. But the mk2 is a slightly better lens, but the mk1 isn't bad at all. I have mostly a 17-40L for comparison - also a great lens.

The EF-L lens won't decrease in value, and will provide useful results today. The mk4 is unproven and who knows when it will ship.

Buy the lens first, and then keep saving for the mk4 body as it will only get cheaper and easier to find over time. The 7D may disappoint vs. the 1D3 over time and use. Every feature in the 7D for the most part will be available or better in the 1D4 down the road, unless an electronic level is a must have feature. But Bogen does sell a $15 green bubble shoe level for the 1D4 and 1D3. :D

Why do you want the 1Dmk4? Because it's canon's latest and greatest?

if i was gonna drop 5k on a new camera, i'd make real sure i could justify buying it.
