You mention worrying about the D-ring coming loose.. Have you tried this:

Wet the bottom of the rubber part of the D-ring connector before screwing it into your tripod slot. It allows you to screw it in a little tighter.

Haven't had any problems. The connector has been on there for at least a week now with no budge. I'll have to take it off for the first time today, when I get my grip.

I actually did that from seeing a post on FM forums. Seems to have work really well.
