I am going to be shooting at our local arena. I have a 40D and these lenses, 17-50 F2.8, 55-250mm F4-5.6, and a 85mm F1.2L. I was thinking of using the L what do you guys think?

Why not rent a 70-200 2,8?

Your 85 won't focus fast enough and most likely too short. Your 55-250 would be good but it is too slow and won't let light in. Your 17-55 will be too short

Take the 17-50 and shoot from the corners. You'll be limited in the types of shots you can get but you should be able to capture some goal-crease action from both slightly in front of the net as well as slightly behind.

If the arena is really well lit, you might get away with the 55-250 and some post-processing, but I wouldn't bet on it.

As noted, the 85/1.2 is really slow focusing so will be of little use for following action. I wouldn't say that the 85 is too short - that depends on where you are setting up and what types of shots you are looking for. When I'm shooting goal crease from the corners, I sometimes find my 70-200 on the 40D is too long.

Thanks, that's what I've been doing. I arrive early, shoot through the glass off a piece of ice and set the "Custom White Balance." Just wondering if I should label and save that setting on my camera or repeat this each time I go?
