Before sending in my lens to be worked on I searched this forum for info on possible prices and fixes. I found some things in different threads that were helpful but I had to go through a lot of different threads to get a ball park idea of cost. Having now received the lens back from Canon Service Center I thought it might be helpful to others to share this information. If others want to add their experiences it could provide a helpful link for people looking for this kind of information. Here is mine.

Lens: 70-200 L IS
Date Code: UW
Service Center: New Jersey
Date Sent: 11/14/09
Date Returned: 11/19/09
Total Cost (including return shipping): $177.26

Reason Sent:
Lens not being recognized by body and IS searching or grinding when trying to lock on to focus.

Service Details:
"We have examined the product according to your request and, it was found that the contact of the part was faulty the unit did not function properly. The EMD/IS lens ass'y was replaced and product functions were confirmed. Checked all, adjusted center/tilt/focus & cleaned all factory specs."

That's the point Gas.
If we share with each other the lens, the reason sent, the fix, and final cost it will give us a range that will help keep things in perspective. I held off sending my lens in because I didn't want to get into a $500+ fix. If I had known it could come in considerably lower than that I would have sent it in earlier.

OK, my lens needs help. I read here - after looking through dozens of posts - it might cost a lot. I'm still sending it in for a free estimate since you never know what they'll say. What I read here will not change that.

Wierd---I had the exact same thing happen to my lens. The cost was the same as well, $177. You won't believe how clean the lens is when you get it back.
