So I've been shooting my 350D for the last 5 years or so, more and more recently, and with my first Child on the way in Feb. I'm looking to get a new camera for Christmas.

I Used to shoot a lot of wildlife (mainly birds), but find myself shooting portraits/strobist and quite a lot of other things, I even tried Motorsport last week and enjoyed it. Low light performance is going to be miles ahead of my 350D which ever I choose. Any improvement over 4fps is going to be great.

Budget wise, I can _just_ stretch to a 1DMkIV, and have my name on a list from Kerso, but I'm wondering if It would be better to get the MkIIi or indeed the 7D.

I tried the 7D in Jessops and was a bit 'meh, it's a camera' the 1DsMKIII in warehouse express fitted me like a glove(but what a price), but the 1DMkIII in Jessops felt a little different, perhaps because I didn't have my lenses with me and wasn't allowed to fire the Shutter.

I've tried a friends 10D and grip and his 40D and grip and just find them a little too bulky on the portrait grip and I'm concerned that the 7D's grip is going to be similar.

I know the 1DMkIV hasn't shipped yet so we don't know how that's going to feel, but the body is supposedly very close to the 1DMkIII.

Thoughts anyone?

There is a lot of difference in the prices of the cameras that you are comparing!

I'm actually rather happy with my lens collection at the moment, I might pick up a 1.4x teleconverter at some point early next year if I do get a 1D, but otherwise the next L lens I pick up... who knows might be a 300 f2.8 or a prime, I don't know where my photography tastes will go in 12 months time, but I bought the 24-70 recently just for portraits.

I'm aware there's a huge price differential between the bodies, but on the other hand this is going to be my one camera purchase for the next 3-5 years unless it starts paying for itself, so I want it to be the right one for me.

Cheers,

Colin

My two cents would be to get the 7D and either just save a few grand or buy glass with the few grand saved.

Edit: Also, why would you not consider a 5DII? That's what I would get if I had the money for sure.

Interesting to see how the price in the UK of the 7D is falling sharply. Two well known retailers have taken £600 off the original price, glad I didn't jump in and buy in the first week or I'd be feeling a bit sick by now!

Most Canons currently - 1D(Mks 2&3&4), 7D gripped 50D gripped x2, 40Dgripped x2, 30Dgripped, 20D gripped, 350 gripped, 300. with L lenses

AF speed for Birds in Flight. A friend has one and whilst it came way with some great shots, it didn't feel right, and just couldn't track the birds well enough.
