So what filter should I buy to stack on top of that one?

I'm a bit unclear as to what it is you want. Do you want exposures like the ones seen in this thread?

What filter are you currently using? Can you post a link to it?

As an example, here is a 90 second exposure using this filter: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …mm_110_Solid_Neutral.html (external link)

yeah that's what I want. I'm happy with the filter I have now I just think it needs to be a bit darker. I have this one http://www.hoyafilter.com …/ndfilters/graduatednd10/ (external link)

Ok...you have a graduated 3 stop filter. I don't think there are circular graduated filters that are darker than 3 stops.

If you want to stay with graduated filters you would need to go to something like this:http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_grad_soft_100x150mm.html (external link)

Of course if you go with square filters you would also have to purchase the mounting system to attach them to your lens. $$$

If you want a long exposure, like most of the shots in this thread, you can just get a solid ND filter in 8, 9 or 10 stops. and you'll start getting the results I think you're looking for.

lol schagen, I saw your shot, 4 seconds, F22... no way is it a 10 stop filter.

nd10 is like 3 stop. you need an ND1000 aka 3.0 aka 10 stop. Naming convention is weird, but you'll figure it out.

Yeah I don't now much about filters. I still like it though it is a good filter. But I will buy a second one. So is this what I'm after? http://www.camera-warehouse.com.au/hoya-10-stop-nd-filter (external link)

out of curiosity - anyone do a 10 -9 stop shot with a fisheye?
if so - would you mind posting
and comment how you got around the bulge of the lens
if not - why? because of the shape of the front element?

Not with a fisheye, though it's possible.

I use the vizelex ND Throttle adapted to the sony A7r. It's an adapter with built in variable ND. Problem is that you're limited to what the adapter can do and no more. 30 seconds with an ultrawide doesnt produce much cloud movement:

54 seconds and hardly any movement. The wider you go, the longer you need for movement to show up.

Yes. Get that in the size that will fit your lens. You'll get the effects you want.

this really depends how involved you want to get into this type of shooting. I'de buy haida personally, because it has the best performance, however, you'll have to decide between square and circular. If you want all of your lenses to use graduated and solid ND's, then a square set is better in the long run. if you want the occasional 10 stop, then screw on is fine as well.

I have my share of both square and circular, and now shoot mostly square..... however, have considered moving back to circular for the size and simplicity. I have a complete set of graduated filters too, mostly sitting in the bag, dont really like using them. Heck sometimes I think I should just handhold square filters up to the lens

I guess the worst thing about square filters is how bulky they are. My sony lens has a 55mm thread, however my adapter is 100mm.... it's fairly large. another option is going down in size to 75mm filters..... just really annoying thinking about it.

Thanks heaps! Yeah I'd prefer to go the screw on mainly because of the convenience of it and I don't like the bulkiness of the square. its possible to screw a filter on to another one isn't it?

yes, but on wide angles, like 24mm and wider, you'll probably get vignetting (black corners).
