Both shots with canon 17-40, don't remember fstop.

Combination of 10 stop lee and 3 stop firecrest, so thats a 13 stop shot
240 seconds.

Especially like the first. Are these screw in or holder filters? I have three screw in Haida ones, but want to experiment with longer exposure so need to double up, and wondering best way to do it?

holder filters.
bloody expensive but well worth it.

I also have the firecrest 16 stop which is amazing and color-cast-free.

If I were you I would extend my existing system what is always cheaper than swapping to the new one. If you get satisfied with results of your experiment then you can start looking for better quality (if required).

stacked haida's will have a tendency to flare on top of butchered IQ. You can do a single 16 stop filter, or 10 stop multiple times and blend in photoshop via simulation, which works very well and costs you nothing extra.

Hi Charlie,

I see use sony A7R and A7RII with canon gear.
Wanted to ask - how does the sony handle the long exposures? does it heat up? can it handle those very long exposures or multiple long exposures?
I'm considering getting it because of resolution/IBIS/DR to complement my 6D, but I do a lot of long exposures/stars/star trails and I hear it has some issues..

TIA

Jacob

the A7r/A7rii are godlike for VERY VERY long exposures*

that's if you buy a $5 smooth reflections app

if you do exposures 30 seconds and faster, then their regular LE is fine, and easily beats a 6D in DR. If you're into 5min exposures, the Smooth Reflections APP is a total step above anything I've seen before. it INCREASES the DR of your exposure, pull 5 stops if you need to.

exif may say 10/5 second, but they're like 5 minutes

of course you can do your typical bulb shots, and heat is only a problem on really hot day, direct sunlight. Here's a shot on a normal sunny day, 5 minutes, wasnt an issue.

you can find issues floating around the web, but those usually include hot day AND pulling shadows hard AND in bulb. No worse than canon IMO, and there are ways around it using smooth reflections.
