the A7r/A7rii are godlike for VERY VERY long exposures*

that's if you buy a $5 smooth reflections app

if you do exposures 30 seconds and faster, then their regular LE is fine, and easily beats a 6D in DR. If you're into 5min exposures, the Smooth Reflections APP is a total step above anything I've seen before. it INCREASES the DR of your exposure, pull 5 stops if you need to.

examples:

exif may say 10/5 second, but they're like 5 minutes

of course you can do your typical bulb shots, and heat is only a problem on really hot day, direct sunlight. Here's a shot on a normal sunny day, 5 minutes, wasnt an issue.

you can find issues floating around the web, but those usually include hot day AND pulling shadows hard AND in bulb. No worse than canon IMO, and there are ways around it using smooth reflections.

Thanks!

I really prefer to do it old school - use the filters and get it right with bulb mode.
I also can't for the life of me understand why I need to pay money for an additional app for a $3200 camera... beats me!
I'm leaning more and more towards getting the A7RII.

Did you have long exposure noise reduction enabled in those shots? or is that straight out fo the camera? I don't pull the blacks too much if any so I hope that I can use the A7RII...

One final question - how well does IBIS work with manual lenses? like samyang/helios/other..

no NR, no LENR.

$5 app is a long exposure simulation, and based on what we spend on filters adapters ect. $5 is an absolute bargain, in that it can turn any lens into a LE machine without the need of filters. I prefer using filters in conjunction with the App, as my samples are with filters + LE simulation to create ultra long exposures. I think once you start using SR and find out the raws are drastically different (instead of standard 14 stop raws, you may end up with 16 stop raws).

IBIS for manual glass.... you have to manually adjust the IBIS focal length, and it works very well with shorter FL, however with something 400mm, you probably only get 2 stop ibis. Absolutely fine with 200mm's as I do have a vintage lens that works great. With MF zooms, splitting the difference seems to do OK, like a MF 80-200 seemed ok setting IBIS @135mm. Not optimum, but certainly better than without.

Decided to do an exposure stack test. 32*15 seconds exposures resulting in 8 minutes exposure.
Clean, noiseless.

I will use this further.. Could have saved me the 16 stop filter :(

see, that wasnt so bad :p

I gotta sell off my 16 stop as well. Huge advantage of stacking is that you get noiseless photos AND you can focus and expose normally in camera without having to prefocus and do bulb calculations, which can be off if the ND doesnt match exactly to spec. Another advantage is that your test shot is only 15 seconds long as opposed to 8 minutes. It really sucks to do an 8 min exposure to find out that you're the slightest OOF because you bumped focus while mounting your filter.

disadvantage is that photoshop stacking is intensive and can take a long time, hence SR in body stacking is such a high value.

Definate advantage to stacking.
You can also clean up errors (junk) in the frame.

Have you tried doing a long sunset? how does the changing light affect such a long exposure?

I dont' intend to get rid of the 16 stop filter.. but I'm sorry i spent so much money on it!

Heya,

I have, here are some examples (just scroll till you see sunset). Also, the stacking info (# and length of exposures):

looks VERY overexposed and overly bright.
For the water you can use a polarizer to cut the reflection.. you could have also used ISO100 and not 200..
would be nice to see if the information can be restored.

I have processed it exactly as I want it. No data is missing. The clouds and water are very, very close to being clipped in my final file. The shots were underexposed by almost a stop when I shot them (this is a vertical panorama), but I didn't lose any shadow data.

I spent the weekend in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park...arguably my favorite place in the country...a bunch of firsts, which is why its a great place...been there 10 or 12 times and can always find new things to do.

2 Minutes. 9 Stops. A7R2 and 17-40L, ISO 50.

Yes...I know...most will say that not much gonna change at that duration over something shorter on a scene like this...I disagree and love what it does!

And yet another brilliant shot!

I totally agree about exposure time. The longer it gets the more even and balanced out is the lighting. A 20 second exposure might have blurred the water the same, but there clearly is a difference.

Thank you sir...very kind of you.

For me, the really long exposure refines the textures and patterns of the moving water, it reduces it down to the most common path...shorter means more irregularity, which was not what I wanted for this one. Glad you like it...
