Definate advantage to stacking.
You can also clean up errors (junk) in the frame.

Have you tried doing a long sunset? how does the changing light affect such a long exposure?

I dont' intend to get rid of the 16 stop filter.. but I'm sorry i spent so much money on it!

I'm no expert when it comes to bulb ramping, however due to ridiculous raw power from stacking, you should be able to recover a lot.

here's a sample where I just painted in the foreground, and it's extremely clean.

NOT a true ND shot, but a simulated one - 240 frames from a time lapse that I shot, stacked and blended, spanning 12 minutes. Thoughts?

Is it a lake or ocean? Looks great, but horizon looks choppy like land mass.

If you were already committed to the timelapse, great way to make it work two ways. And it turned out nice, no visible gaps. Interesting how it even made the water feel like an LE.

There is a lot of discussion in the Sony crowd about using the in camera app to do this same thing in place of true LE...I would not want to put that many actuations on the shutter for each LE I do.

Peconic Bay, eastern Long Island (NY). It's about 8 miles across, island with sand dunes on the far left.

Yes, the intent was a time lapse. Later, I learned the stacking technique. It's almost like having two cameras setup up, one for each type of shot, but doing it with one.

In the full size image, there was some blur in the sand, lower left, probably a little tripod shake from the wind. I cropped most of it out :)

Agreed, not worth the shutter clicks just for the LE.

Thoughts?

I love it. I think the colours, the exposure, and the processing are just gorgeous.

This is a technique that I've been working with a bit lately. My results have been less than satisfactory (they suck), so I'm really impressed with what you've done here.

If I was going to do anything differently from what you've done (which is a kind of a joke, as my results don't come close ;)), it might be to remove some of the non-organic elements that I find a bit distracting: the pole (I don't know what it is) that sticks up into the sky at the end of the dock and the reflectors on the posts. But, that is pretty subjective and you might like those elements.

you can actually cut down the actuations quite a bit by using the App with an ND filter. For instance, if a 10 stop F8 gives you 5 seconds, 64 actuations gives you roughly 5 minutes. If 64 bothers you, do 32. You'll quickly find out that you cant do many many of these anyhow, it takes up too much of your time. The A7rii is rated for 500K shutter, I certainly wouldnt worry about it. Also, it doesnt drain your battery as much as you would expect it to.

Stacking is tough for non sony shooters, I used it on my 6D way back, and essentially, way too demanding for photoshop. Sony's app saves it as fast as a regular raw file lol, instantly.

Thank you.

I did quickly try to remove the pole - a fiberglass mooring whip - but the content aware fill was noticeable. I may try doing it manually...

Nice idea about the No Trespassing signs, they should be easy to remove from the dark poles :)

44 frames of 8 seconds exposures, equivalent 6 minutes.
Lee small stopper, cpl and RGND.

And thank you Charlie for making it all possible :) and probably costing me about 4K for the A7Rii in the future.

I would probably not even have taken this shot because of the tree. Amazing that you made it work!
