I have that Vari-ND slim or say for wide angle lenses and it vignette badly on my 16-35L, so i am sure even that blue/gold one will be the same if it is in same thickness of that Vari-ND.

The Vari-ND is 14.2mm for 82mm version, and 14.2 or 10.5 for 77mm version.

The Gold-N-Blue is available in 77mm either 4.8 or 8.5 mm thick. So it should give way less vignetting. The bad thing is that the Blue/Gold isn't available in 82mm, which is needed for the 16-35. I'm not sure if the Cokin Sprocket Ring version is possible to use.

OK, so with that blue/gold it will be better vignetting then, but i need 77mm because i have 16-35L mkI not mkII, and in all cases i will buy a step down ring adapter from 82-77mm and see, say it may add 2-3mm thickness depend on that adapter ring.

That makes sense as the Vari-ND is in essence a 2 filter stack.

Fortunately, all the lenses I intend to use it on share a 77mm filter thread (17-40, 24-105, 70-200/4).

Then at least, you have top quality vignetting. :D

BTW: the blue/gold polarizer is also available as a threaded slim mount variant, which presumably won't vignette (as badly) on UWA's.

The Gold-N-Blue is a nice filter in the thin mount. I haven't found a situation to really use since I've been using my Singh Ray Color Combo alot. :)

If you buy the thin mount, you shouldn't have problems with vignetting at all.

I wouldn't even bother with a step down ring. I just use adhesive putty. It doesn't stick but, it works! :)
Here's an experimental image with the Singh Ray G-n-B 77 thin on my 16-35 II. Remember it's experimental but, it worked! :)

You should have no problem with vignetting on your 17-40 with the thin mount. On the other hand, if you buy the Singh Ray Vari-N-Duo in the thin mount and can deal with a little bit of vignetting, you should be ok. :)

The problem with the thin mount however, is that it doesn't take a filter holder for your grads and such. So you'd have to hand hold those, which can be an issue with very long exposures and/or when using filter sandwiches. While the attached filter holder may vignette on your UWA's, it will probably be fine on WA's and tele's.

QUOTED IMAGE

OK, i will see if i really need that B&G filter for some applications. in all cases i really don't use polarizer that much nowadays, only ND and GND.

That's what I usually do. Hand holding a GND takes some patience and practice. Try it sometime. :)

Here's a Youtube video of Tony Sweet using this exact same technique. It's called "feathering". Enjoy! :)

Here's a nice long exposure shot with the Singh Ray Color Combo and Singh Ray 3 stop Reverse GND handheld.
It's 30 seconds @ f/8 and I didn't have coffee yet. :)

Thanks for the link! I'll check out the other videos as well.

The thing is that if the normal mount doesn't vignette (too badly) with the 17-40, I think I would prefer it over the slim mount, as it would still give me the option to use a filter holder with longer focal lengths.
