Here's a nice long exposure shot with the Singh Ray Color Combo and Singh Ray 3 stop Reverse GND handheld.

Stunning, the tones and micro contrast are amazing.

It's 30 seconds @ f/8 and I didn't have coffee yet. :)

I can see how a caffeine induced twitch might have helped you with your "feathering". :D

Would you say the color combo effect cannot be replicated in post, or is it more of a convenience slash getting it right in the camera kind of thing?

Thanks for the link! I'll check out the other videos as well.

The thing is that if the normal mount doesn't vignette (too badly) with the 17-40, I think I would prefer it over the slim mount, as it would still give me the option to use a filter holder with longer focal lengths.

Trust me. The standard mount will vignette w/o the filter holder but, just a tiny bit. If you can deal with that, you should be fine. I find it more of a pain really. And fumbling with the CPL and filter holder together can be frustrating when you need to get the shot. :)

Thanks! I firmly believe in getting it right in camera. Some may not agree with me but, until you own this Color Combo filter it cannot be replicated in post.

Here's another photo with just the Singh Ray Color Combo.

I hope my info was helpful/useful to some but, I don't want to stray from the topic. Back to posting 10 stop ND photos! :)

So once you own the filter, you can replicate it in post? Now I'm confoozed. ;)

The problem with evaluating filters is that there are precious few side-by-side samples showcasing their effect (one shot without, and one with the filter).

Doh! Mea culpa...

Maybe we should start a GnB/Color Combo thread, as there seems to be plenty of interest for first hand info on these.

You can't replicate polarisation in post to be honest. You should head to the Singh Ray Blog and read up on the benefits of the Color Combo. It's what made me buy one. :)

I did start a post a while back and it drew some interest. Some did actually buy one. :)

602 seconds - B+W 10 stop.

BTW, great shot above guys. I haven't used this in a long time. Should head out soon.

How the hell do you figure out you need to keep the shutter open that long? I mean 10 minutes is a long exposure (or am I doing math wrong?) and to test shot after shot till you get it right the light would have changed by then...

That's what I usually do. Hand holding a GND takes some patience and practice. Try it sometime. :)

Here's a Youtube video of Tony Sweet using this exact same technique. It's called "feathering". Enjoy! :)

I HATE hand holding, especially on my 10-22 UWA. It's an absolute PITA especially since you've got to make sure you keep your fingers out of the frame. Doing it on my 70-200 or 28-75 isn't AS bad but I still don't like it.

Well, hand holding a GND filter isn't for everybody. I have the patience to do it. Plus, I have a steady hand. I usually use a remote cable and then use two hands to feather. It can be awkward depending on how high your tripod is set up. I usually have knee pads with me in case I need to get low. It's what we landscape photogs do to get the shot we want right?:)

lol or just bang up our knees :) I've done some fun stuff trying to get a shot, I just don't care for doing the whole hand-hold thing. I do when I have to but I wont say I like it ;)

Not the polarisation, but I was referring to the color effect. As I understand it, the Color Combo warms and intensifies the colors, which would be one of the easiest adjustments in post.

I also prefer to get it right in the camera, but I'm a bit more reluctant when that's going to set me back $400 (plus $53 bucks shipping in my case, which is rather absurd for such a small item) just to save me a few seconds of PP.

I guess it depends on your needs. It works as advertised.

Here's a link from the Singh Ray blog. Tony Sweet does a comparison with the filter and without. I won't make you buy one but, I'm really enjoying the benefits of the filter. :)

Wow. This is quite a thread. Amazing work all! This and the other thread on Pacific Northwest photos made me look into Singh Ray ND and GND filters.

Then I saw the prices and fainted...

Yep, cheap they ain't...

The 9/10 stop ND's (which this thread is actually aimed at) are not nearly as bad though.
