Hey everybody. I recently got an older copy of the 200mm/2.8L, mrk I, I guess; the first version. GREAT lens, but a bit heavy. I got a second-hand 2x extender and would like to use that with this lens on my little XSI. My question is, which tripod collar, if any, would I use. I'm thinking that the lens and extender combo will make things a bit front heavy. Now I do have the battery grip to add some weight on the camera lens. I haven't set it up on the tripod yet, but wanted to see what you guys thought. Do you think a tripod collar/ring is needed, and if so, which one? I have tried to do some online research and know that ther is an A and a B version, in both black and white. Looking for black, if I do need one, but not sure which one would fit this particular lens/extender combo.
Any info or suggestions would be much appreciated.:)

The photo in the Canon Camera Museum (external link) suggests it uses the Tripod Mounting Ring A; you can see the hinge. I don't guarantee this, since the 28-300 uses a similar-style tripod mounting ring, but one that's unique to the lens. The TMR A is the same one used by the 70-200 f/4 among other lenses. White or Black is purely individual cosmetic preference.

I don't know if this one would work (as in if it's the A-mount or not), but it does fit my 70-200 f4 IS.

http://www.amazon.com …/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top (external link)

About $100 cheaper than the official Canon one.

Same as the poster above, I don't know if this is the A-mount, but it also fits my 70-200 f4 IS

It's direct from China (so it takes a while to get here) and only $12 (!!!), the finish of the paint is okay but it fits great and works fine.

I have that one, and it does the job on my 70-200 f/4 but it takes a lot to rotate it. Im not sure if canons is any better.

Tripod rings are great...

Tripod rings will allow a photographer to switch from vertical to horizontal position without needing to cantilever the camera onto its side when using a non-Arca compatible quick release system.

When using an AC system, a RRS L Plate will solve the vertical problems with a non tripod ring equipped camera lens.

I have a 3rd part TMA to use with my 200/2.8L II, I am fairly sure the Mk I uses the same.

The lens is light and short enough you can use an L-Plate on the camera, so a TMA is just convenience really.

However the EF 2X II is fairly long for a TC so the TMA may help here, NB that the TMA still goes around the lens - not the TC.

PS you will find the AF v e r y s l o w with the 2X, but optically it is good, the 200/2.8 is a very sharp lens. Wide open is good even with the 2X but it gets a lot better 1 stop down.

Hey, thanks for all the info and suggestions! I ended up getting the real deal, the Canon brand tripod mounting ring for that second hand 200mm/2.8L lens; Ebay find. Paid $475.00 for the lens (hey, a lot of money for me!) and just wanted to make sure that it was secure and snug. I got the mounting ring right here off of the site from Apollo 11(thanks Andrew; the ring showed up today and is perfect!) mounted it up and it's great!

Only one problem. I have a real el cheapo plastic and aluminum tripod from a few years ago; local Wolfe Camera purchase before my Big Bend trip (QSX 700I DX). I got the grip for the reburbished XSI that I got over at B&H, and of course when I go to mount the lens and camera onto the tripod, the knob for the mounting plate; horizontal to vertical adjustment knob is in the way of the grip and I can't mount it! Well, at least on the correct side. I ended up just turning the camera around and mounting it the other way onto the plastic mounting plate . Now it does hold, but of course the long handle for the up/down and the horizontal/vertical are on the outside so I have to reach around and adjust them like that. I really like that fact that the tripod is light, about 2.3 pounds. I had reconstructive back surgery about 3 weeks ago and my doc has cleared me to drive, BUT, my weight limit for picking up and carrying is about 8 pounds MAX. I weighed out the camera, 200mm lens, tripod, bag, etc. and I am good.

I guess I just wanted to know what you all thought given the odd way I had to mount the camera and the weight restriction. On a buget, of course, so if you suggest a light-weight tripod to replace this one, are there some that are actually economical? You know, not the $400.00 carbon fiber type!

Again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

See if the head can be removed from the tripod. If it can, you could certainly get a light ball head. The Flashpoint F-2 ball head from Adorama will easily hold what you have. Here's mine on a Slik 613 CF (my small, light travel set) with the 1D3 and 70-200 f/2.8 IS (a combination picked for maximum load on the head, at that angle):

Looking for a ring mount for a 200mm 2.8 prime myself. It's a current 2cd generation without the lens hood attached. What is the brand name of the tripod ring mount you have?
Thanks

It's much more expensive but for piece of mind, I would go for the Canon Tripod mount ring A II (B)

the 200/2.8, 300/4 and 70-200/4 all use the same ring. I'm sure there are several other lenses that use it as well, but those are the 3 I've owned.

But note the 300 f/4 IS uses the different TMA-B ring, this is also used by most of the macro lenses except for the new 100mm L macro.
