Just made the 20D purchase from B&H!!
I've been tooling around with a G5 for about a year now and have finally made the jump! So now I can finally move from the "G-series" on over to the EOS section of this forum!!

So are there any custom settings I should switch on as soon as I get the camera out of the box? Stuff like the noise reduction setting or the flash to fire after the exposure?!?

Now I just have to save up for a good lens and flash gun!

Congrats :) Check out CF4-1, many people like it, I like it for some circumstances, and if you're gona use it it's best to use it right away.

Congratulations on the 20D.
I know that at first I was dissapointed by the softness of the 20D. Then I learned that by default it is soft and that it is expected that you will fix that in post processing. Since I bite at post processing (I use freeware Picasa 2 most of the time) I discovered that by setting the parameters to max sharpness and increasing the contrast in camera I was a much happier camper.

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.
I have a Cannon with me at all times. You can't take the shot if you don't have something with which to shoot.

Thanks for the congrats my friends!
I can't wait to tear open that box tomorrow like a 10 year old on Christmas day!

lostdoggy that's a big jump! Are you looking to go pro?

Tim, I'll definitely hit up the manual for CF4-1!! I know you mentioned this before but can you refresh my memory on what the function does?

Skip Souza do you know if the 10D had this problem? Can it be over come with a good lens?

It's not a "problem", it's just a big difference between P&S and D-SLR cameras. Your 20D is not going to perform all of the image enhancements you're used to seeing straight out of the camera on your G5. BUT, with proper post processing, you'll come up with better images than you ever got with your G5. Yes, it takes a bit more time, but as someone who moved from a G5 to the Rebel XT, I can certainly tell you it's well worth it.

QuicK!!! Leave now before it's too late!! This forum is sure to ruin your financial standing with any major financial institution (not to mention your spouse!!)......and don't even start on 'L' lenses......there is a definite sickness around here. Just ask how many of us are 'Lcoholics'......:D

Just kidding of course. I moved from the infamous G1 to the DRebel and now have a 1D.....don't regret any of it for one minute. Enjoy your new camera!

Welcome on the darker side. Here is where all your very basic aggressive instincts will came out, every time you'll think that there is "something else" that you need for your DSLR. We will be glad to help you on this, by bringing to you attention those gadgets, accessories and lenses that you may have not yet found by yourself. Your wallet won't be happy, but sure enough you'll have a great time ! Congratulations.

Well the good thing is that I 'never' used any of the 'shooting modes' on the G5 and only used the 'auto' setting for the first week I had the camera. But unfortunately I very rarely ever traveled out of the AV mode except certain low light conditions when I would use the TV mode at 1/40-1/60 handheld. So I don't have a lot (if any) experience with manual or custom setting modes. And I was going to be very content with going from the G5 to XT such as you did, but I plan on taking a lot of action shots (like hockey games) and thought I might need the extra FPS that the 20D can provide.

LMAO!! I love the "Lcoholics" term! Perfect descriptions! But I should be ok.....I don't have much money to throw around and just getting the 20D has put me in a spot, so I doubt any "L's" in the near future! I'm just going to be so happy with all the stuff I can do with this camera that I couldn't even think possible with the G5!

That's exactly what I said a year ago when I got my Drebel for father's day!! Didn't even know what an L lens was and was quite content with the kit lens......until I started seeing shots taken with other lenses!!! You have been warned!!:D
