Well if they didn't spot you then they might have their heads down, or looking the other way. I like them looking right at you. Excellent shot!

I think that is a nice shot, I wouldn't say it's necessarily a failure because they saw you. Some shots might work better when the animal doesn't appear to aware of your presence, but a lot of people seem to like it when the animal is looking at the lens. Sometimes I will even try to get the animal's attention so they will look towards the camera.
