Love the shots. I am not looking forward to walking into a gym and getting that urgggg!! yellow tint!

Honestly, I strobe when ever possible. Hockey and Hoops.

Big fan of 2 & 5.

Nice job - wish could shoot at ISO 2000 here, it's strobes or nothing!

Strobes would have added nothing to these K. Very well done.

I have a couple of other gyms that I can get by at ISO 2000 but most are ISO 3200 with really old lights. I am looking forward to getting the strobes out for a game tonight. Should be interesting since I have been in motor drive mode for about 8 months.

Amazing.

They must have some serious lighting in the gym you're shooing at. You didn't use any strobes, just normal lighting from their ceiling ?? (or do they have strobes on their ceiling? What did you mean by surge of the light cycles?)

I tried the high iso 2000, almost the same shutter speed with my 70-200 2.8, didn't get as good results. It must just be the lighting, plus RIT has a super high ceiling and really tungsten lights.

Wonderful work! #2 & #5 are my favorites. #2-love the skin/ball tones, but most of all, the beads of sweat and facial expression/concentration. Your photos give the viewer a piece of the action and emotion with the way that they are "bokehed", giving an almost 3D effect. Thanks for sharing and keeping the bar elevated for many of us!

The shots are incredibly well done. Let's save this thread and parade it out each time the 'ambient-versus-strobed' basketball debate rears an ugly head.

I tend to shoot ambient too, but before we break out the champagne it's worth noting that this gym is very close to NCAA lighting levels.

My local high school gym is a full two stops darker than this.

OP in this thread was at ISO 2000, 1/800 and f/2.

My gym? ISO 4000, 1/400 and f/2. That's not nearly as easy.

...... keeping the bar elevated for many of us!

Hummm, that's going to spell trouble for me. I keep thinking DIII (yet another gear upgrade). But, nah, it's my post processing skills that stink. I just keep telling that to myself. :~(

No stobes here. Just the gym lights.

Regarding the light surge. Most gym lights go through a cycle. It happens so fast that your eyes typically don't notice it. As the bulbs get older they start to get more whacky in their cycle and you can get some pretty significant differences from photo to photo unless you are shooting in cync with their cycle. I believe this is 1/60 but others that are more technically knowledgeable might be able to better explain it.

Below is an example. The two shots were consecutive shots from a short burst so are about 1/10 of a second apart. Note the rather dramatic shift in both color and intensity.

Hope that better explains it and again, anyone with a better technical summary, please chime in.

Excellent point. This gym is a luxury to shoot in. Due to its very high ceilings and bleacher configuration, it is actually too bright to effectively light with strobes unless I shoot them direct from the top of the bleachers. It is the only gym around me even close to this level.

JeffreyG hit it on the head. This gym is not normal by any stretch. Most any of the new camera bodies have good enough ISO performance that in this gym, many would get very nice shots. The equipment that is most helpful is the f/2 and f/1.8 lenses to get even better shutter speeds.
