Hello all,

Not sure if this question has already been asked. I have the 420ex Flash and I'm about to get the 580ex. (hoping to do some real creative stuff with both of them) I am trying to avoid getting the transmitter (which I may get anyway)

My question is- While on the camera body, can the 580ex trigger the 420ex if the 580ex is off, or is on but does not fire because you only want the 420ex to fire?

basically I was wondering if the 580ex can be a transmitter alone and not be utilized as a flash

Not sure if that question even makes sense But I was just wondering.

Ciao~

Yes. You turn the power of the 580EX on and set the Master Flash to Off using the LCD. It will emit the pulses needed to fire the 420EX but not fire its flash output.
