canon 200mm f/2.8L II with 2x extender

Would anyone have any sample shots/crops of canon 200mm f/2.8L II with 2x extender?

wondering if that combo is acceptable and and at which stop does it become usable... etc.

It is fine if you have great light and can use F8-11. In less than perfect light, it's less than ideal. I had the Sigma APO 2x on my 200 2.8 lens.

I emailed Phil a RAW file (wide open) for him to assess himself...he seemed pleasantly surprised by the quality. PM me if you want the same file emailed to you....it's with a 50D as per Phil's request.

I guess you're referring to the wife bit?

Agree, as long as you are fine with f/8 to f/11 it works surprisingly well. I have used it for shooting soccer and wildlife and was happy with the results- until I got my 300 f/2.8!

Shot below is 70-200 f/2.8 IS at f/11 with 2x Canon extender

Thanks again for that raw file, Bob! I've now got a 2x Extender and took it out today for a trial run with the 200L & 50D.

If you keep the shutter speeds up then results are pretty good, but pixel-peeping the 50D @ ISO800 isn't recommended. For a 10"x8" print I'd think you'd get professional quality results.

Here is one wide open - pretty good I reckon. The light at this time of year is a bit of a nightmare though, I think I'll find the combo more useful in the Summer. I don't regularly need longer than 200mm so I think the 1.4x & 2x extenders will suit me just fine for the odd times I need the reach.

Whoops - thanks - corrected! And thanks for sending me the file. When the light is fairly poor 1 stop is a big deal & I'd definitely get the 400L again (or even consider the 100-400) if I often needed that focal length. With a bit of care the 200L + 2x does fairly well - certainly well enough for the occassional use I'll put it to!

50D, 200L, 2x Extender, 1/1000s, f8, ISO 800. (Handheld as was the duck above)

I'm extrmely happy with my 200L markII. i ended up buying one second hand on Potn. 200mm is at the threshold of "possible" hand holding without IS for me. it is also so darn light to that helps.

really pleased with this lens. i feel like this is sharper than my previous 70-200 IS f/2.8L, at 200mm.

i have yet to pickup a 2x and try that
