I’ve been saving up money to purchase the 7D. One issue im having is whether or not to purchase insurance on the camera. I will be buying the camera from B&H and they offer the N.E.W Sagemax warranty, which includes accidental damage. My question to everyone here is do you add insurance to your camera purchases? And in this case would you do it? It’s an additional 200+ for three years coverage on top of the camera price and taxes.

All of my gear has insurance. It's a rider called a "Personal Article Floater". It's extra, but covers me for everything zero deductible. I have almost 9K in gear between the wife and I, so I want to make sure in catastrophic loss or theft I am covered.

many people get insurance from Chubb with their NANPA membership, it may not be the cheapest but is said by many to be the best

State Farm charges $12 per thousand dollars worth of equipment. Its in a rider so that if you make a claim it will not go against your home or auto insurance. There is no deductible and it covers theft, loss, or breakage. No brainer for those who have State Farm. You may have to have other policies, I'm not sure. I do.

I am not sure its a no brainer because I have read that people have had all their insurance policies canceled after they made claims, read that on a few forums now

thats cheap though, 10k for 120 bucks, I guess worst case you get your premiums with another company afterwards its not like there's none to choose from :)

It's a rider on homeowner's or renter's insurance, so you have to have one of those.

I don't make a living off of my photography and I still have all my gear covered. I dealt with State Farm insurance as well. Ended up covering all my camera gear (lens, bodies, flashes) and my laptop. Can't go wrong purchasing insurance. Oh and I don't have any other policies with them so my policy was $13 for every $1,000 with no deductible. I was really happy with my experience with their agents. DO IT! :)

oh, and my policy also covers me overseas which was a plus for when I went to Italy with ALL my gear. If you're unsure about something, just ask them and if they give you an answer you like, just kindly ask them for it in writing if you do decided to purchase from them.

I have three personal article policies through State Farm. One of them is for all my camera gear. Piece of mind, ya know?

If you must know...

USAA offers coverage, too, to vets, their spouses, and kids. I pay $75 a year to cover my camera (cheap), my lenses (2L's and a couple others), a ton of filters, and other gear. It was cheaper than putting it on my homeowners, so if you have military in the family, they might be an option, too.
