Is this lens any good for it's price?

"Good" and "price" are both subjective terms. Spanning 28-300mm is asking an awful lot of a lens, and there's a reason Canon's L-series version costs £2,000. The quality wouldn't satisfy me. Also be aware that the lens is designed as a "do-it-all" for 35mm format cameras, whereas on your 1000D it wouldn't give you much wideangle. I believe the lenses in your sig will easily outperform it and will be more useful to you. It doesn't have IS.
