Well after taking a long time off to get over burn out from shooting so much, I now begin the bball season.

The gym I shot at does not allow flash so I used the 7D to it's max :)

I shot a few videos during the game as well, very addicting lol I never thought I would like it, but it was actually quite fun.

You can read about the game and my settings there plus view the video I shot (it is not great lol)

I hear ya!! I am addicted to the video with my 5D Mk II. Most of my recreational reading lately has been about the multitude of accessories you can get for stabilization. It is crazy addictive and am seriously considering liquidating some still gear to get more into it.

Did you shoot your video with the 70-200? If you did, I am impressed. I find trying to both zoom and manually focus is very difficult and even more so at f/2.8 when the subject is close.

Darn kids and your toys with video - waiting for the IV for that ;)

Why wouldn't they let you strobe? Looks like an easy gym to strobe to - just a school rule?

Looks good Matt, though personally don't like 4 cuz of the pompoms in front of her face - would be a cool effect if she was doing one of those hands up legs out thingy they do, ha.

Big K,

That video was with the 135L. I shot another one with the 70-200 while zooming lol That one, not so good :) But it was fun.

The strobe thing is a school/coach. Very very annoying! Hell they don't even allow it for football. The coaches and ad there are idiots (excuse my french).

Trust me I am itching to get my strobes out this year. I just purchased the new 11 incher reflectors from Alien Bees that are for sports but won't get those till next month sometime (ground shipping).

I am going to do 4 strobes on a side this year, then shoot the other part of the game without them. That way I get plenty of shots, but also high quality ones.

VERY nice shots. What I like is the total lack of any noise.

I shoot indoor soccer last night with my 7D and a 85mm 1.8 iso 3200 and iso 6400. The noise was deafening.

You mention "pushing in post" . What exactly do you mean ?? any other noise reduction used ??
any other tips for shooting in that type of environment ??

PS the gym I shot in has REALLY poor lighting

Novice - So novice that I can learn from anyone even beginners

David,

By pushing I mean I still had to adjust the exposure by almost a stop in post processing (LR2). Unfortunate that always add more noise then if I had been able to expose properly

I used Noise Ninja for noise.

Only tip is to get the exposure right lol If you can't because you are falling below a certain shutter speed (1/400th for me) then just do what you can.

Look good Matt. So with the video you have to manual focus? I haven't looked to much into the new video that these cameras are doing but I guess I will when I get a IV.

Nice shots Matt, love the action and the colors. Question for you, how did you set up your AF and how do you compare it to the other cameras you have owned.

Dan,

Yeah manual focus when using the video mode.

Robert,

I love all of the af possibilities of the camera. I would say the AF is as good as the Mark II, Mark IIN. it is pretty solid even in that really bad light

Glad to see you got a 7D Matt for this bball season. I look forward to more shots with it.

When I saw these picture I thought "Idaho" or something, but it's Utah. Close enough.

Can tell it's not Georgia basketball.

Thank you. bw!

Thanks for the reply Matt. It seems that a large group of shooters feel the same way. I wonder how that zone af will work out in the end.

I have not toyed with the video yet but that is my next thing to do with the camera, only shot a couple of minutes so far. I have seen some great 7D videos but they usually come from video pros that have a wealth of experience. I need to pick up a wider angle lens to really get started.
