There's a couple of threads on the IR capability of the G3. Since I have the IR "reference" -- the G1 -- I thought I'd provide all interested with a comparison. Now it's winter in New Mexico, so there's not much foliage around, and the sun's not bright and the sky's not too blue, but I found what I could and produced the following page on my website
Infrared comparison (external link)

To entice you, here are two images:

Details of comparison are given on the web page.

cheers,

Could you please check the Infrared Comparison link? I couldn't get the link to work.

Thank you,
BobbyLee

Philip, BobbyLee is right; your link is incorrect. The correct link is HERE (external link)

After seeing these images (and also dropping BobbyLee's IR image into Photoshop for evaluation) I think you reached the right conclusion on your website. Thanks for shedding some light on the situation! :)

I clicked on the corrected link in slejhamer's post. I'm wondering if you could have gotten the same sharpness if you had used the same Av settings for both the G1 and G3 and let the time vary (I wouldn't mind taking a little longer shot with my G3 to get a G1 equivalent shot)? I haven't done enough testing to know how much difference in sharpness there is between 2.0 and 2.8. Good examples and I appreciate the information. The G1 shots in your posting were real nice.

With regard to the sharpness issue, a few comments. I haven't found any difference in sharpness between the lenses on my G1 and G3, or between f2.0 and f2.8 on the G3. But there is a big difference in sharpness between the images produced out of the camera by these two units. The G3 seems to be in the tradition of Canon's DSLRs, with "softer" or less-sharpened images out of camera, but with much higher resolution. Once sharpened during editing, the G3 images are superior to the G1 images, no doubt to me.
With the IR images I posted, the same sharpening was done once the images were reduced from 2000x1500 approx. to 640x480. But the original "sharpness" of the G1 is still quite apparent. Unfortunately in this case, so is the G1s ability to resolve the IR spectrum better, as can be seen in the detailed images on my website...
So there are two factors at work here, but I think the detailed images make the decision pretty clearly.

cheers,
